The box is great when you get used to it, I haven't had a great opportunity to give it some from 2nd to 3rd as I have been on the motorway all weekend, and that is when I have been playing around with the throw. It didn't pop out once all weekend, and i'm not conciously thinking about throwing it into gear.

My dealer reckoned the 3rd gear issue was mostly in peoples minds once they heard the story. The guy I spoke to at the dealers was a Type R fan, and used to have a supercharged EP3 Type R , so I dont think it was just sales talk. I still took the demonstrator for 2 test drives before placing my order, just to make sure, and couldn't fault the gearchange.
Still, some people have had a genuine problem. |

Ok, not only the 3rd is the problem. Sometimes (when the car is cold) it's hard to put the reverse on so, (old school) i move with 1st gear a little to move the syncro and after select the reverse. But the worst thing was when i was running fast (ok probably going fast with a sport car is not normal

It's wierd, I just got a CTR and since it's first 20 miles I've had no problems, in the warm or cold, with any of the gears, 3rd & reverse included. The shift is incredibly smooth and firm, much better than any other car I can think of (except my paddle-shift Audi from last year but that's cheating!).
Perhaps this is an issue they've (finally) sorted? |

Have a look at the Type R owners website, there is a lot of new information. The key points: - The fault seems to affect a few random cars. - There appears to be a fix out. Link: Civic Type R Owners • Login Quote from the site dated 30th Oct 07: " Just spoke with a nice lady on the number listed above who assured me a fix was out 4-6 weeks ago - in the form of a new 3rd gear synchro. She took my details, established my local dealer was City Honda in Basingstoke and is phoning them to get them to call me to book may car in to have the fix applied. Couldn't be simpler! All that fretting about having a fight on my hands for nothing I suggest anyone who has the same issue does the same as me and let's hope the new synchro fixes it once and for all. No mention of freebies yet though....... **UPDATE** Have just had City Honda on the blower - the fix has been out in Japan for the Civic Hybrid for 4-6 weeks, however, the part is not on general release via honda tech in the UK. Hence the disconnect between some people saying there is a fix and some poeple saying there isn't one over here yet. The tech at my dealer told me to take my car in tomorrow, they'll fill out a report and then using that and my initial call to Honda UK, they will request the specific part for a fix to my car. Let's see what happens - I just hope their courtesy car isn't a Jazz!!!! " |

Mine is a pain, it's alright if you really shove it in, but anything slow and relaxed (especially when cold) pops it out. Happened to me yesterday, was sloppy on the way home, gear got to the first 'notch', popped out, and I was sloppy/slow at putting it back in, and there was a nice second of crunch. Spoke to my dealer a few weeks ago who knew nothing, but I gave Honda a call, so it should be logged with them. I will give my dealer a bell this week to see if they know anything knew. Don't want to take my car there to have it checked, I want to take it there to be fixed.

So we have to wait until Feb?! Well, at least they are acknowledging there's a problem! Was head office you spoke to, Ali?
Mine is getting annoying now, had 3rd gear pop out twice on the way to work today and crunched it as well. I thought as mine was an '08 car they would have sorted things by now! |

Hi chaps, i have a new TypeR and seem to be having this 3rd gear problem. Does not seem to be getting into gear smoothly. Only done 600 miles now and still having problems.
Would you suggest leave it for a bit or contact a local dealer now? |

Although the notchiness is still there I have subconciously adapted my driving style around it over past few months. In total it has jumped out of 3rd approx 6 times since new, and not at all in last 3 months. TBH I was in 2 minds whether to go ahead with the fix as it rarely happens now, but I didn't want to be left with the feeling something wasn't right, and the possibility of any metallic bits in my gearbox oil |
