I'm now at 36000km and want to sell the car its that bad.

it looks like your dealers are turning a blind eye to the problem as are ours... tell you the truth it seems like not as many people hare have the problem as on 8thCivic.com - 8th Generation Civics which is about 300-400 but the fact that there is a problem globally should mean something...

here is what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the info Portabuddy. Although its not very welcome news - I'm a bit worried now . Hope mine doesn't get any worse. 2500 miles and still only happens very occasionally.

my gearbox is still rubbish. had 3rd and 4th synchros changed for 3rd gear problem but now have problem with 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear changes. garage tech gaffer(who's very helpful) said he felt something when down changing to 2nd, so he got service manager to test drive and he said there's nothing wrong with it, they are taking my car to test drive it for a week, not happy about it cos no doubt they'll be thrashing round in it, but not much else i can do. rang honda uk they said i got to take it to the dealer and if i'm not happy with them take it to another franchise for a second opinion. pretty fed up with it now and the fact that no one is bothered about it. this is my first honda and proberbly will be my last...muh

I think you should be ok. Just give it a little time to bed in. It should be OK. I didn't have any major problems with mine....... but the more I drive it the better she goes.

wow it's kind of crazy that you guys (fn2 owners) are having problems with 3rd gear because its the biggest complaint with the civic si fg2 from the US. Honda usually gives us the dulled down docile versions of a type r so it wasnt really a surprise we had the problem since our ep3 had it also, but for the type r's to have it is unacceptable.

Yep, had my FN2 since April '07. Done 15K and 3rd gear still misses from time to time. I haqve had recalls for the handbrake and the drivers door handle and asked dealer about 3rd gear problem when car was in. He acknowledged there was a problem, but told me rapair bundle was not yet available. Would be good to hear if anyone has had a fix done.

Well my Type-R seems to be OK....... for the present time, Hope I Don't get any problems. That thing about the third gear pop'in in the States was good, Wish they would do something like that here on TV.

My experiences

I've had my FN2 for around 6 months now and have done approx 13000km.

In the first 5000km I had the third gear pop out here and there and it felt as if it never went right in sometimes. 2/3/4 gears tended to be a notchy at high revs when downshifting and upshifting.

from 5000km-12000km third gear never popped out but it has been notchy on downshifts only, upshifts were beautiful and slotted in fine.

and from 12000km, I had fitted a Honda OEM Limited Slip Diff into the gearbox, had the bearings changed, new oil and now the gearbox is fine doing anything, high/low rev up/down shift, everything slots in beautifully, no notchyness at all amazingly. It's great and I can turn even more aggressively and there isn't so much understeer now as well. Don't know why a LSD wasn't made standard.

That's a great upgrade !!!
So does the LSD interfere with VSA or not ? Is this an easy bolt on into the gearbox ?

because in real road driving it would not make much of a difference- many owners would not see the benefit or difference - but they should have definitely made it an option for people that wanted one

I have the same problem with my car bought just 2 months ago.
I called Honda Italia and they told me that it's a well known problem that affects also some models of Honda CRV. They are still working on a fix in Japan and the release is expected for the end of April.

Nope doesn't affect VSA at all, it does however require you to go harder to set off the VSA as you have more grip. The LSD shows how poor the oem tyres are, my sidewalls are absolutely trashed after two trackdays lol. I've only set off vsa once since having the LSD and that was just to see how far i could go before it would kick in and it was pretty late.

It is not an easy bolt on. the part itself is easy to obtain, in that you can get any K20A gearbox LSD and fit it so that counts in all type-r's from japan. Fitting the LSD itself into the gearbox is alot of work, the gearbox needs to be taken out of the car and opened up, then you need new bearings and have them pressed onto the LSD ,then fitted and then put the gearbox back in. Very time consuming and expensive.

I do agree it should at least be an option, well it wouldn't have cost them much to put it in. Honda in aus sell the CTR for $39990 and based on conversion rates, this is much cheaper than what you guys in the uk are paying considering the car gets shipped to australia and a 10% tax rate is applied on the import. Guess it's honda trying to maximise profits =)

Well based on conversion rates, i'm from aus, the LSD itself set me back approx £200, i bought it when i was in japan and fitting was £300. fitting cost more than the LSD itself lol. It is advised if your going to fit a LSD than you change your clutch and flywheel at the same time to save yourself some money when it's time to replace them.

here we go , another australian with cheap prices lol
i think here we can get a quaiffe LSD for around £600 plus vat and then there is fitting, but definitely for trackdays and the like, a LSD is essential
where is your LSD from ? DC5 ?

lol, at least you guys have the option for either of the new CTR sedan and hatch, we can only get the hatch =(, would have gotten the sedan in a heartbeat.

my LSD is from the FD2, which as far as i'm aware is the same as the DC5.

whats the sedan ? you mean the FD2 ? we don't get it, have to get an imported one and pay extortion on insurance, and the warranty is iffy.

@harlequin : i admit im jealous , apparently there is a 2 year waiting list for British people to emigrate to Australia , i wonder why
