3rd gear

has anyone had anything done by the dealer about their 3rd gear on their type r's? mine seems really pants have asked the technician in the garage, he drove my car and said he couldn't fault it, he recons i need to give it time to bed in. have done 1500miles and sometimes it works ok and others i have to wrestle it in. do i need to give it more time to settle or am i just getting fobbed off? also how the frigg are you supposed to tell if the oil is low or not? have checked it twice now and i may have well stuck my finger down the hole and tasted it, guessing its ok... don't get me wrong now i really really love my type r. any suggestions anybody would be appreciated

I haven't had a problem with my third gear since about 400 miles, it goes in sweet as a nut now.

I had the same problem With my R for the first 1500 - 2000 miles gave it a chance to bed in and its fine now, have to say tho even tho the gearbox is sweeeeet sometimes the it needs a good manly clunk to get it in 3rd ocasionally

I was very interested to read this as I have found it difficult getting into 3rd sometimes - i thought it was just me.

I am just coming up to 2000 miles and i think it is happening less now.

i have had a similar problem with mine once or twice

but it has about 1600 miles now & it seems to be getting softer & quicker to change gear, so hopefully its just a newness thing

Hi All,
Went into my dealer a few weeks back to ask about if they knew about the problem and I was told that nothing had been released and there was no known problem.
Well was still not happy so booked my car in last week to go in yesterday to have it looked at.
Took my car in on the 23rd Jul, orginally told that it would take a couple of days so was told wed at the latest.
had the call from my Honda dealer yesterday eve. turns out that my car is up on the ramp *** the gearbox in pieces and will be for quite a while, they have found the problem and will require a nre 3rd gear syncro. and linkage, The technician has been in contact *** Honda UK and all of a sudden they are now ware there is a problem and that a 3rd gear modification kit is being released, seems Honda were even keeping the Honda dealerships in the dark about this one.
So to get to the point, the kit is not coming in til the second or third week in Aug. so by poor little baby is gonna be in bits for a few a weeks....and to top it all Honda UK were meant to call me today to arrange to deliver a courtesy car to me, and did they? NO!!!! so not only am I without a car but am now having to chase Honda, is this really the service we have come to expect from Honda, even the technician at my Honda dealer seemed annoyed *** them.

I am surprised that they don´t just swap the whole box!
Is there no stock of parts!?!

There is no point in them replacing the whole box as all of the gearboxes have the fault. Honda are working on a fix that should be available soon.

I have spoke to honda's customer service re this and was told i would be contacted early august when a fix was available. I was also offered a very generous goodwill gesture for my problems since i got the car in early march. When i say problems though its more of a minor irritation and the rest of the car has been sopot on!

I still have the 3rd gear problem with my type r and I've had mine since the 2nd March so it's been well worn in.

To be honest am not sure if it's gotten better or if I actually just got use to it because it doesn’t happen as much anymore.

Time to call up my dealer for an update i think.

Dealers had been told to contact Honda whenever they had a case of 3rd gear selection problems a while ago so that your details could be logged until the fix came out in August.Seems like your dealer jumped the gun and ripped your box apart without checking that they could fix it and probably got a right rollicking from Honda about it! No wonder the technician was annoyed!

got my car booked in tomorrow for the 3rd gear, also had a problem when trying to select reverse (car was at a complete stand still), the stick will just sieze solid just above reverse and i can't do anything, tried dipping the clutch etc but in the end had to force it out. was panicking when this happened, done it twice so far never had a problem like this on any other of my cars. will have to wait and see what the dealer says

Have you been contacted by honda to say they have the fix available or are you just booking it in on the off chance your dealer might know a fix??

spoke to the gaffer in the garage today at my dealer, he spoke to honda technical and they are reporting 3rd gear/synchro problems says this could be affecting my reverse aswell. honda reportedly looking to replace the whole gear box if faulty with a newer type. he said that there would be maybe a 3 week wait to find out more about this and that they would probably want my car for upto 4 days when they get the nod. honda also made a note of car details to track it. he even said that honda might get in touch direct with owners but wasn't sure yet. pretty much what you were saying above jay1109...
