False oil warning ?

Happened twice now. I get in my car, drive for 10 minutes and the check oil warning light comes on.

First time I stopped at the next gas station, checked the oil level with the stick-thingy. Seemed ok. Decided to put in a few drops anyway.
Next morning I checked the oil level before starting. Still ok.

Second time, same story. Only this time I didn't put any extra oil in because the stick really told me it was ok. I just shut off the engine and restarted. Error was gone.

Feels like the warning is just a false one. Either that or I don't know how to use the stick-thingy.

Anyone had the same thing ? (I did do a seach, came out empty).

wipe off the stick to make it clean and then put it in again.

if you just pull it out it will always show max.

on my earlier car there was no need to wipe off but on the civ i have to do it every time...

You did say you checked before starting your engine on one occasion, but don't bother checking while the engine is still warm, it will never give you an accurate reading.

Hi I have not got my manual to hand but I remember reading that if you get the oil warning and turn off the engine it may take some time to warn you again after restarting. Something to do with the oil settling back down. I only mention it as I would hate for you to think that it was a false error just because it cleared by stopping the car for a few mins or so.

After shutting down the engine, and restarting, I went for at least another 15 min drive without the warning coming on. So shutting of the engine makes the error go away for sure (even if I don't feel it up with oil).

I know the stick-check works best on a cold engine. So I checked that the first morning after I had the error for the first time.

I'll have another check this afternoon when I go home to work. Like I said it happened to me twice in 1 week. If it happens 1 more time, I'm visiting the dealer for a 2nd opinion.

ive had this twice, took it back to the dealer both times.
Firt time they said it was just a 'glitch'

Second time, they said that the oil warning is very sensitive on the new type-r, just to make sure that you really dont run out! They put in another 1.5l of oil, and its not come on since. (They did it under warranty too).

My car is 3 months old, and has done about 4500 miles.

I have had the same problem also twice but it was two weeks in between them. The funny thing was though that it happened at more or less the exact same part of the road I am driving everyday

Was that on top of the correct amount according to the dipstick?

Over filling can seriously damage the piston rings with high revs!

they said the car had used up half of its oil in 3 months, so they topped it up on that.
So i guess my problem was slightly different to yours.... Jon

Got the message this morning again at the exact same spot of road to work. Wonder if there is some electromagnetic disturbance or something at that place
