The mid range performance of the diesel, when chipped, is very good compared to the R (see pic below). But if you want excitement, nothing comes close to the R for the price.

The thing is, its great having type R on track but real life is a different story...I mean I dont drive to work through brands hatch but through many traffic lights on long journeys (3-5) hours would the type R bee a bit of a pain and a monster on fuel consumption....

If driven nicely does the i-VTEC engine of Type R still drink a hell of a lot cause my Megane II 2.0 L used to must say !

Keep in mind, chiping is not legal without paying extra taxes etc, atleast not in my country..

Take both of them for 1 hour spin, and then decide, and keep in mind the R is twice as expensive when it comes to fuelconsumption....
But i think service intervalls ar more frequent on the diesel....
When the Type R can beat the ford focus ST 225hp, high torque (above 300Nm) in "fun to drive" and keep up with it on the track, i dont think dthe CDTI will....

So i guess if you put "thrill" and "image" as a big factor, the answere is R.
If you put "economy" and "laidback ride" then its the CDTI.

I see.... I was more along the lines of perhaps asking the dealer here to just re-map it or to know where to be able to re-map the engine...

Was just doing a bit of reading up on the forum, and have noticed that the diesel has a rather low Kw power compared to the rivals.

Here the Series 1 BMW has a very very similar if not identical price, whilst the 120d stands at 130Kw! thats 177Hp!!!! vs Honda's 140

Quite saddened by that actually. Its like I don't want to like or even respect the BMW and then they go ahead and do this. Plus surely the 1 series will have very good driving capability even compared to the S. Being rear well drive etc. Hmmmmmmmmmm....

Yes Type R is more image and the thrill of driving just thing the roads here are not up to that quite frankly....type S is far from a wallowy ride if my standard Megane II with 17" was a screamer handling wise, contrary to ***'s belief....

AAAAAAAAhhhhh what to do.... BMW 1 ?

No - they are not a chip as such. The seller plugs a computer into the diagnostic socket on the car and uploads new software.

You can defintely buy the Type-R mesh to fit to a Type-S as I've been seriously considering doing it myself. Though I have to say, I've grown to quite like the front of my Type-S as it is.

Echoing other people's thoughts here - I would've loved a Type-R but it would've cost a lot more to buy and the cheapest insurance quote I got was twice what it costs to insure my Type-S. Plus there's the fuel economy issue.

That said, if there really was no difference in initial purchase price my decision making could've so easily gone the other way.

Well I've had both, and what am I driving now...........TYPE R ...... and am a high mileage driver 8000 miles since May and have never looked back (Well only at the people I fly past) Fuel consumption will depend on your driving style, take it easy and its very good, but the whole thing about an R is fun and the grin factor........

I think you may be right just sms'd a friend of mine he as a peugeot 2l GTI his consumption is around the 11l per 100 km park and more if he steps on it but he says just don't drive like a monkey should be fine.

Here is the thing how come a BMW new 1 series 120 D has 170 hp 320 nm torque surely that is a hot hatch in its own right???? I mean up to the early 2000's that was a power car? no?

A 120D to the same spec as a Civic EX is £26,000 (cf £18,500). It has to have more power for the price. Having said that, my EX has 190 bhp...

But thats atleasstt another 1000 pounds you put in right? for that to work...

I dunno weird.....I think it makes really little sense the pricing here....terrible I like the honda now must pay for it...

Still slightly tilted towards the R cause of its on par price with the diesel....it all depents if I can get my hands on re-mapping or not, but all that means pouring mooooreee money into the diesel which makes it EVEN more expensive than the R .....see what I mean....its like all that and u still get massed by the R on the highway or on streets heheheeh

apart from the engines, the seats, the front grille, the price, and the dash colours, what are the differences between the S and the R?
