Good find on the picture.

I was told that the Type R NEARLY has the magic seats...the base of the seat folds up (as in the picture) but there is no way to secure it there. Apparently you have to secure it using the seat belts. The standard Civic has a catch of some sort to hold it in place.

Still waiting for my Type R, so I cannot give first hand confirmation of this!

What brawnr said is spot on, they go up but you need to use the seat belt to keep them there. The only magical thing about the front seats is they are comfy as and look the part

it's a 3 door thing - the type S has almost magic seats too

"you're gonna like this - not a lot!"

(apols to all the youngsters out there to whom that quote made no sense whatsoever )

This is a daft question but I can't find the solution in the owners manual.

How do you lift the trick rear seats ???

When the seat is down there is a floor mounted hook over the seat leg where the green arrow points to in the picture. I cant find the button or lever that releases it.

No "release" on the 5 door - just lift the seat base up.

On the Type S, the hook is spring loaded. You just have to pull the hook far enough back to release the seat leg.
Just remember, when you put the seat back down, you have to manually pull the hook back again so that you can secure the seat leg.
It is a pointless and stupid bit of design. Why make the seats NEARLY magic.

3D models are not designed to lift the seat base. That is why it's not mentioney in owners' manual, and a part of trim is missing at bottom of rear seat. That's what my dealer told me.

My hook moves about quarter of an inch when you push it by hand, but it does not move enough to release the seat leg. Do you have to force it to release it ?

It could be jammed,
My catch was a bit stiff to start with but after pushing the catch quite hard it now works okay.

My bottom seats in my Navara fold up the same was as the Civic but there is a catch to hold them up.
Using the seat belts in the R really don`t work (or it could just be me)
I found one of those elastic luggage straps the ones with the hook on either end worked best to hold the seats up.

I'm guessing that the seatbelts in the R are the same as in the S - Once you have folded the seat bases up, pull the seatbelt out as far as it will go - as it then winds back in it will make a ratcheting/clicking sound and once the belt is tight to the seat base it will hold it in place.

The seatbelts ratchet in to secure non-isofix child seats.

Pictures here - Proof that the Type S has Magic Seats....

I did wonder why Honda would go to all that bother of designing and build bottom seats that fold up but with no secure way of holding them there

Thanks Mate!

same as mine. it doesn't seem like it moves back enough, but if you push it back as far as it will go and then lift the seat it will come up.

I have two Spaniels, folding up the bottom rear seats make it easy for the dogs to get in, and they can't damage the seats as they are sitting on the carpet

It looks like there are various uses from the posts below. For me it is because I am thinking of mounting a small sub woofer under the rear seat. Lifting the seats will give me better access for running cables / mounting the sub etc. I may also lift the seat for carrying something, as others have noted.

Thanks for the Good idea of using the seat belts to hold the seats up.
