Scratching Grinding noise from Aux Pulley Area - Problem Solved?

Just some quick info for anyone interested. Over the past few months i noticed a scratching type noise coming from the Aux Belt area in the engine bay. In particular the noise appeared to be coming from the top most pulley. On the first video posted below you can hear the noise. It sounds like a dry or worn bearing. As you can see, when i pinch the rubber hose the noise disappears.

I thought this was odd so went on search for a solution to this issue as i'm out of warranty in any case. Previous threads on this subject suggested to change the pulley itself but i then came across a thread on the 8th Gen US forum where a user had found a solution to this very issue. He fixed the issue by replacing the PCV Valve and rubber hose. I thought i'd give this a shot in any case as for the sake of £25 or so it was worth the risk.

As you can see from the second video the scratching noise is no longer present and another thing i've noticed is less oil consumption since changing the PCV valve and rubber hose around 1000 miles ago. My CTR has around 56k on the clock and the valve seemed fairly shot when performing a 'shake' test.

If anyone wants a how-to or some further info on how to change the PCV and rubber hose on their FN2 then let me know but to be fair it literally takes all of 2 mins to change.

wow thats very strange, i have the same noise and I thought it was the top pulley...what is the PCV valve? my car uses a lot of Oil maybe its the same issue as yours?

Jason, to test this when your car is running squeeze the rubber hose attached to the PCV as shown in my first video. You might need to squeeze quite hard as my old hose was quite stiff compared to the new one. If the sound disappears then you have the same issue i had.

Hey relic as resident expert can you put into lamens terms what the PCV valve does? reading on the internet it mentions sludge build up and engine damage?

Should i be worried?

the noise i get is intermittent, I had the bearings tested a while ago and no issues found, next would be the auto tensioner?

Hey mate, just watched 2nd video and there is still some sort of scraping noise - could it be the videos dont highlight the actual issue properly?

the PCV recirculates oil vapours created during combustion into the inlet manifold so they can be ingested and burned off.

If you open your throttlebody and look into the inlet manifold you will see an oily sludge in the manifold- this is normal, not ideal but it's how cars are designed for emmisions.

One easy way to remove this is to fit an oil catch can along this hose to collect these vapours and dispose of them by some other way

so theres no damage done then?

in the example above why is the PCV valve making that noise?

They pulse with the engine induction pulses (crankcase pressure modulates).
Its basicaly a breather thats supposed to stop oil venting at the same time.
They plug if oil tries to streams out the hole/vent....normally.
Have this scratchy scrapy noise in the wheel well too.
Never considered it being PCV related.

would it cause a whinning noise as revs increase that ive been expecting to be pulley/bearing related

As said if you clamp the vent pipe for a few seconds you'll know

The whining noise with rev increase is probably a separate issue. On my 2nd video this was with starting the engine on a cold start so the noise you are hearing is different from the pulley area noise which is now gone.

Ill give this a try, im just going to be disappointed if it doesnt fix it haha, is it an easy fix replacing the valve and hose?

Normally...sometimes PCV valves can be a pig to get out.

I just tried it and squeezing the hose actually stopped it!

so its definately the valve? how do you remove it? if done incorrectly what will happen? what causes the grating noise?

It's worth changing the valve and hose together as the parts are around £25 from Honda. Make sure you buy the PCV valve, rubber hose and washer together. The parts are very easy to change. I think their is also a How To video on YouTube for a US civic. My engine is pretty much silent after changing these parts.

My car was in at Honda for this and they've ordered up a top aux pulley for it under warranty. I was certain it was the top pulley myself so can't blame them, I'll just have to be telling them otherwise lol

Your lucky their trying to fix the problem some dealers say it's nothing to worry about and to wait, I'm sure most dealers don't know about this fix
