the distance left is worked out by:
knowing how much fuel is left in the tank; and
the mpg you have been doing over the last few miles.

Therefore, if you had been driving at (say) 15 mpg, and had 6 gallons left, it would say 90 miles to go.

If you then took it a bit more steady over the next 40 miles - and got (say) 30 mpg, you would have about 4 gallons left and it would say 120 miles to go.

That's all a bit simplistic and extreme, but is close enough to illustrate what happens

But what average consumption does it use just after you fill up?

I think it defaults to something at that point rather than using actual history.

Some of you guys are getting better MPG driving a Type R than I am in my diesel!

I guess it's proof, if any were needed, that it's more about the driver than the car!!!

I believe it has a seperate, not displayed, log of what the comsumption was over the last x miles, which is not reset when you fill up

This is an educated guess, based on the fact that a couple of times when I've been stuck on motorways, running late and no idea where the next (convienient) petrol station is, I've gone into complete eco mode so as to at least get to the meeting.
When doing this, and after filling up (post meeting) the dist to go tends to be high 500s, low 600.

In normal driving, knowing where the petrol station is etc, at fill up it normally tells me high 400s

Getting a good MPG is almost as much fun as taking roundabouts above 6500rpm. At least it is when you're stuck in slow traffic, there's no real other option anyway.

And when the MPG is above 32, it's time to take it back to 23 in like 10 minutes

Easy, you only need to be doing 95+ and you are in there I think. All I know is my Type R does 4,500 revs at about 85. Either that or I haven't found 6th yet.

All this is on a track of course

With the fuel prices increase, I thought I would see how good the fuel consumption could be with some restraint on the throttle peddle. I managed 37.4 mpg average over 364 miles.

Requirements:
- Light on the throttle,
- Only overtake very slow traffic,
- No VTEC (that was the hardest part),
- Longish runs on country roads.

It was torture.

Within 4 hours of getting the cr I was getting 37.8mpg, but I have never seen that again! Your lucky if I see 30 mpg and thats without v-tech'ing it and driving it as I usually drive But I don't care, I didn't buy it to be fuel efficent Even at rising fuel costs

Yes I'm getting about 29-30 mpg. I've done about 370 miles now. I think the mpg will get better when it's run in from what I've read. But if I only get 30 mpg that'll do me, as that is what I expected.

Took my sister out for a drive in the car today. Was getting 39.8mpg on the outskirts of edinburgh! Now done 500 odd miles and about to put a few more on it, but the consumption is getting better the more I drive it.

But I suspect that although the engine is still running in, the better fuel consumption is more me getting used to the car and it learning my driving style

I was doing between 35 and 55mph mostly. I did give it a boot on the bypass to get by the folk who look like there gonna pull out on you. You know the one that hog the white line and never indicate.

Just driving the car a lot better and not driving too hard all the time. Petrol is still 95.9 where I buy it so i've yet to curb my driving cause of rising prices

I can see how that can be done.

My fav at the moment is driving along quite happily with the Cruise controll on and then suddenly you get some idiot in a 1.6 golf or saxo right up your back end. I pull in to let them past, watch them brake for the approaching speed camera wait till I have clear it then Vtec it to them! You can see the look of horror as you then sit up their back end so quickly......just teach them not to do that again to me in a hurry
