FN2 Oil Use

Hi all

I've had my fn2 type-r for 4 months now and a week or so ago the oil warning light came on. I slowed down, came off at the services, waited 3 mins and checked the oil... to me it seemed absolutely fine!

I carried on driving for about an hour (i had to get home) and the light didnt come on again. Took it to the garage a couple of days later (still with no light coming back on) and they said it needed a litre of oil!

Is this normal?? 1 litre topup after 4 months? I've driven just over 3000 miles and always wait a reasonable time for the engine to warm up before driving it aggressively. It's me pride and joy after all!

Just would like a bit of advice. I'm the first to admit i know very little about how engines work!

Holly Dit! Is it drinking it? I know that the RX8 is bad for oil consumption, but thats due to the rotary engine.

If this is common then I think we all should carry a top up with us incase we have forgotten to check it

I had a problem with the oil light coming on every second day or so.

It only ever happened in the mornings on my way to work (never coming home at night).....it was so consistant it would come on along the same stretch of straight road almost every time.

The garage had a look at it twice....the second time replacing the sensor but the problem continued.

Anyway....i had my 12500 service a couple months back and it hasnt come on again.

To tell u the truth i dont think the gararge had a clue what was wrong.

Oh yes......and i havent had to top up oil since i have had it

Ha ha! Yes i have! ...although i must say its the most vague dipstick i've ever had with the 2 circles on the lower twisted part etc - its not that clear.

I just want to know whether this is reasonable oil use or whether I should be concerned?

i have done about 4500 miles in mine & i check the oil level once a week & it doesn't appear to have used any, i have not had to top it up once

the only liquid it uses is petrol & water for the washers

I have done about 4000 miles in mine and checked the oil regularly and it has not changed one drop since the day I collected it. Although I was warned by the salesman that Type R's can be susceptible to using up oil and to keep an eye on it at least once a month.

My old Type R (EP3) did the same - used about 1 litre of oil in the first 1000 miles. So I'm expecting the new one to do the same.

You are right about the vagueness of the dipstick z1ppy.

Can you cause damage by over filling it with oil?

I seem to remember reading somewhere (either on this forum or in the manual) that if you significantly overfill the engine with oil that it can cause damage (obviously not as much as when there is no oil in it all)

But then the Honda engine is remarkably robust as this sickening 8 minute video on you tube shows (members with a sensitive disposition please do watch, you have been warned)

Me old Dad used to tell when I was a lad and still does---
Never fill over the top dipstick mark, as it will get into the clutch.
Think it still applies today.

I was told by the dealer it would use some oil for the first 5000miles

I have driven 3000 km, no oil comsumption at all from what I can see.

(used the drive in method described in the wiki on this site btw)

On my previous car - a VW, it mentioned that overfilling with oil would damage the cat. Probably the same in a civic?

hey peeps - i have done 3500 miles in my new type r and my oil shows as just below the first dot on the dip stick - so im going to fill it up - i wanted to ask what is the best oil to use.

Stealers told me 10w 40 but i heard 0w 30 is alot better for our cars or do you think untill later on (mileage) its better to stick with part synthetic oil ?

lots of cars, including Civics (and quite possibly Rs too

) use a fair bit of oil in the first few thoudand miles, then hardly a drop from then on

I'd keep an eye on it to be safe, but wouldn't be overly worried at this stage

Re over filling - don't!!!!

This can lead to excessive oil pressue, which can then force oil up past the piston rings, and into the fuel chamber, where it will then burn along with the petrol / air.

This will result in a big black James Bond styley cloud of smoke following you down the road

Which is embarrasing enough in a MkII For Escort in the middle of Birmingham (apparently *cough*), but worse in any car with a cat fitted, as it'll nacker that too

Seemingly its to do with how you drive on the running in period.If you boot it the car will use excessive amounts of oil for the rest of its life.Something to do with valve seals getting damaged.

I think I can confirm this as I used to have an Integra type R that drunk oil.Now that I have a civic I drove it tamely(believe me it was hard)from new to 1000 miles.Ive done 3000 miles and not had to add oil.

I just checked mine and its still at the top mark on the dipstick after the first 1500 miles, ie not used any oil yet.

Nice one Munro, I did the same.

The civic doesn't feel as sharp as my Integra so I didn't fancy losing 5% of my power.
