Probably just replace it with all the redundant petrol Types R's rev counters

Yes but the possible typeR diesel would supposedly be some high revving version of it...which Honda are working on. Plus if the 180bhp is as standard there is always the opportunity to re-map the ECU for further performance improvements....just as is done now with the iCDTi.

High revving diesel?

I'm going to stick my neck out, in writing, and say..... Bol****

Why?
1. By the time the fuel has burnt, the piston has moved too far down. This is why all diesels rev out at 4,500 to 5,000. The high you rev, the more efficiency drops.
2. You can increase the revs a bit by slowing down the initial downward travel speed of the piston by using a complicated, funky and unproven pull rod engine. Revs all the way up to about 6,000. Only advantage is to reduce engine capacity for a certain power output.
3. When Audi built the ultimate diesel racing engine that won Le Mans, it was a slow revver.
4. I assume that the PR people will also claim that it runs on water, makes 400 bhp, is inaudible, cures global warming and makes you more virile.

Ready for this post to be linked to in one year's time...

If I wanted a car that revved to 9 or 10k I would have kept my S2000 or my DC5 Teg.

I was just repeating what Kenichi Nagahiro said in the link of the opening post by the way.
It may or may not be possible to make a high revving diesel engine, but they seem to be putting some effort into trying to achieve it.
