ABP do a KW coil-over kit that allows adjustable ride heights, bit more expensive than just new springs though.

Eibach sport kits for the FN2 should reach their stockists this month, according to them. By all accounts they don't lower the ride height by all that much. Maybe try one of their dedicated outlets for more info?

Would new springs improve the 'stiff' ride?
(I know little about how suspension works)

Lowered suspension is likely to make the ride worse, but the handling even better.
