Nice pictures. Alps are amazing, can't wait to drive there. Did you need winter tyre's for that?

No just used standard tyres, I went at the beginning of July so the weather wasnt that bad.. however I did hit a hail storm at the top of Furka and had no to little control of the car as she slid towards the edge and then towards the rocks due to the camber in the road.. managed to keep her from hitting anything and pulled into a layby to recover from my heart attack and wait until the hail storm calmed down..

very scary moment I cant tell you.. especially as there are no barriers on those roads..

Other then that no problems at all... When you planning on going?

Sounds like you've had unforgettable experience.
We are going 6th of October, first night in Switzerland, then through Alps to Monako, Garda, Innsbruck, GrossGlockner, Praha, Berlin, Brussel.
I'm a bit worry about Austria as there is snowing from time to time now.
Think I will have to keep an eye on the weather and see if it get worse or not. In case of any problems on the road there I can always put chains on my wheels, cant I?

Austrians and Slovenians are astonished that we don't have winter tyres in the UK. I recall once my g/f needed to fly back from Graz, and her flight was cancelled, not because of the 6ft of snow there, but the 1 or two inches that had paralysed Stansted Airport!

Two observations on Autobhans:
1. Lane discipline is brilliant. We need this here urgently!!
2. The derestricted speed areas can be quite short and sometimes for no apparant reason.

When I tell the poles that places close and people stay at home when we have snow they really laugh. Two years ago I think it was we had snow for about 3 months solid and I drove to work everyday without problem!

Well, tell me about it... I was there for xmas up in mountains and it was -30 degrees, and didn't see anyone who was affraid to drive... and last year in england when we had a bit of snow on the roads people didn't go out, and those who did, most of them I've seen they crashed their cars (4blokes from my work). Think this is just the matter of getting used to it and learn how to drive in bad weather
Anyway, I'm definately getting winter tyres for my euro trip as I don't want to end up like my mates on the little bit of snow

Would definitely recommend winter tyres for a cross european journey from november. By the way, I just did a trip from northern Denmark to Tuscany in Italy, some 4.000 km roundtrip in my poor 1.8. It did brilliant, the best cruising speed around 165 km/h speedo (160 according to sat nav) but not good for fuel economy Best to keep it on 120-130 km then. Was a little disappointed at higher speeds with the 1.8, above 180 km/h it gets a harsh sound from the engine, but no problems at all controlling the car. But still, what can you expect from a 1.8 It's a very pleasant car to drive for several thousand km's/miles and you don't get tired at all. The handling is simply perfect.
