Strange Sound

I was driving along today when some idiot ran straight in front of me from behind his lorry (he was running to a burger van ) I slammed on my brakes and swerved away from him but there was this really awful loud, grinding crunching sound that came from the drivers side, Surely I cant need new pads already I have only done 10,000 miles (although nothing would surprise me anymore)!!

Any ideas what it could be?

don't worry, that sounds like the ABS and Brake Assist kicking in.

It is, I hit the brakes hard a while ago, and they made a similar sound, because they are being put on full force at once.

If it was not the sound of that id*ot being shredded you probably needn't worry (some rust residue on the discs?)

As Alan says it sounds like the ABS.

Unless, as Civicfan says, you ran over the "idiot", that also would explain the grinding and crunching.

It tells you in the book that when the ABS kicks in you will hear that sort of noise

Oh thanks for the replies

I was worrying that my brakes had a problem when in fact they appear to be working correctly woo hooooo a first for me lol

The idiot was very very close to being under my car - I could have had him take a look at the suspension while he was there

Do you remember an early 90's song by MC Hammer "You can't touch this?"

In our case it is..."You can't fix this"

It is because the ABS kicks in full force virtually immediately, when your foot comes off the accelerator and onto the brake quicker than it is set too, this indicates you are emergency brakeing and applies the brakes immediately before you do (i.e. it senses your foot on the brake and takes over for you), this then allows the ABS to kick in quicker.

Hope this makes sense,
Tom

I remember working in a Merc dealer many years ago when brake assist first was introduced, and all the cars coming in to have it disabled because it was too sensitive. I will report no such problems with the civic's and I have had it kick in a few times
