OK! found 4 wheels in a local scrappy! As the reason for sale was a F/E Write off they have suffered a bit of colateral damage so I am going to have them checked for true by local tyre walla as a condition for return/swap. Scrappy was OK about it and we will see what breaks cover!

Well, I have dusted the cob webs off the wallet and paid £102 to have my local honda dealer - deVries Honnda (stockton) - supply and fit the space saver kit.

Maybe a waste of money as I may never need it, but you never know.... But it has bought me some piece of mind I supose.

I will be getting a spare tyre first thing tomorrow.

My wife had a tyre slashed by some so and so while she was at work today. Called Honda assist, who came out, but refused to recover the car back home or to a tyre place, as "they don't recover cars for flat tyres". If she had a spare, the AA man would have been happy to fit it and she would've been home by now. Instead, she is waiting for a mobile tyre fitter to turn up and charge us through the nose for a new tyre (we only bought the car 3 months ago).

Bugger......

Sorry to hear of your wife's mishap. I trust no other damage was done - ie paintwork. Not the usual act of vandalism. Any likely culprits? Anyway, join the ever increasing band of forum members who have purchased a spare.

It's a bit of a "work people parking in residential area" thing going on, so there have been the odd acts of vandalism against workers cars.....

As for the bodywork, we'll see in the morning...

To slash somebodies tyres is a terrible thing to to, they must be lower than a snakes belly. good luck with the repairs.

Sorry to hear of your experience. Lets hope next time they are doing it they slip and slash their wrist!!

I think your experience with Honda Assist may change a lot of owners minds about getting a space saver. Many owners won't buy a space saver and refuse to use the can of foam because they are under the impression that the car would be recovered to a tyre depot in the event of a puncture. I must admit I was under this impression myself.

I did buy a spacesaver a few weeks after I bought my car, as I didn't like driving around without one.

I had to pay for it first and then picket their headquarters to get them to fulfill their promise though JTL.

That I am very concerned about, I would write to Honda CS and insist that their supplied breakdown company recovers a car fully equiped to manufactures specification and mention words like 'Watchdog' and 'What Car Helpline' in the letter and demand compensation to cover the lost time and the extra cost of a mobile tyre fitter.

Not sure you would get anywhere. The Honda assist is provided because any breakdown which occurrs in the warranty period is most likely to be warranty related and thus their responsibility (the accident bit added on is just a way to get the repair business) thus they have to recover you anyway so this method is easier and a good selling point. As such tyre issues as you had are not warranty then they are not covered. In addition, if the rim of your flattend tyre was damaged while being dragged on to the bed of the truck or in transit then you would expect them to pay for the damage. I know that generally the AA man will change a tyre for you (they say to use the phrase 'nuts are too tight' when calling) and they may even assist you with the milk etc but they will not generally recover you. At leats that's my experience.

That is one thing that i find very odd.
Civics in Portugal come with a full size spare ,an iron rim , but the tyre is the same as the others ,brand , size etc.
In my 1.8 it´s Michelin Pilot Primacy,
How come that in UK ,where usually the same models get more equipment and an essential item as a spare is missing

BTW, feel lucky just your tyre was slashed, in Canterbury some nutter has been pouring paintstripper and battery acid over cars parked like that, I've seen a brand new Jag (the Aston style ones) with the bonnet completely done (back to bare metal), chatted to the owner, who saw me looking, and he said parkedi t down a road near one of the stations, and they must have been waiting, as the stripper/acid had to have been carefully poured, and left for quite a while to do that much damage, pointing out that it had etched into the metal!!!!!!!!. One wonders what damage it did under the bonnet.

I was under the impression that it was a full breakdown service, not just a warranty fault service (unlike the standard service with Renault).

I understand that some breakdown services exclude recovery if no spare is present, but as this is a tailored service offered by the manufacturer that provides no spare wheel.

I can only hope that on this occasion the AA were wrong. I will contact Honda CS to confirm the situation. If I get anything in writing, I will post so people can carry with them.

***update***

The wife returned at about midnight after her slashed tyre event. She explained the sequence of events (BTW this was not far from Slough town centre).

The AA man arrived an hour and half after being called out. It was obvious to him straight off that the tyre was not repairable and as there was no spare wheel, he could help no more. He called back to HQ for a mobile tyre fitting company to be called in.

Two hours later, the tyre fitting company had still not arrived, so the AA decided to send a flat bed truck to recover the car and bring it home, as long as the mobile fitters did not show up.

THe flatbed truck arrived, but as the mobile fitters were due to arrive in a few minutes, so the AA didn't recover the car after all.

Mobile fitters arrived, replaced the tyre for the handsome charge of £183.

The second AA man, said that there was a 24 hour tyre fitting place less than a mile away, that would have changed the tyre for around the £80 mark, and he would have taken the Honda there if the mobile fitters hadn't turned up....

The AA agreed to compensate her for all the messing about, the sum of £80 (the cheque is in the post).

I don't want to get into the rights and wrongs of this situation, but the bottom line is that a single woman got stranded at night for nearly 5 hours because of a non-repairable tyre puncture. In Slough..... Imagine, David Brent might have offered his assistance

For us, a spare is a necessity, and in hindsight I wish the dealer had mentioned it...
