Question 16" vs 17" is milage adjusted or is it 5% off?

I am planning to buy 16" tyres for winter use, to get a safer and smoother ride.

Is the car somehow adjusting the milage when using a smaller tyre or is just 6% considered neglible?

When a 17" wheel turns 360 degrees the car moves 1,32 meters, but when a 16" wheel turns 360 degrees the car moves just 1,28 meters which is about 3-5% less.

I cannot find any explanations on the net of how car manufacturers solve this problem - so I thought I might just as well ask here. Haven't bought my civic yet, but probably will do it next week.

225/45/17 vs. 205/55/16 difference in diameter is just 0.4%, and thus speed reading difference is 0.4%, which is basically nonexistant.

Putting it yet more simply, 15,16,17 or whatever inch is the diameter of the alloy NOT the wheel

I thought that would be about 4% difference, but I might be wrong - I haven't actually measured it just done some calculations on the back of a napkin. If it is just 0,4% then I would agree it is neglible.

So, the tyre is always the same, but the alloy is smaller - ah ok.

A 225/45/17 tyre is 11.5mm shallower than a 205/55/16 tyre, which means that all together the wheel is 2mm different in diameter. To work out the tyre depth it's the first number multiplied by the second then divided by 100.
