Winter tyres

It might be a good moment to emphasise the fact that the summer tyres fitted on the Civ are only good for temperatures down to 7C. Below 7C you should use winter tyres (these are not snow tyres, they are winter tyres for use below 7C). Summer tyres when cold are very hard and have low grip and poor handling (especially in the wet).

The lack of friction on the roads we are used to in the winter, is actually a function of our summer tyres and not the roads. The roads feel great on winter tyres!

I've never heard of this before, could you elaborate? Is this the case for all UK tyres? Or it is a Civic characteristic? Where can you buy winter tyres?

Certainly I've always noticed tyres going off with distance but never appreciated the loss of grip in the winter was basically down to the tyre compound not working at low temps rather then the friction available from the road surface.

Cheers

Paul

Still no advance on the 25/3 for my EX

Thanks Pottsy, hadn't clocked the Wiki entry.

Certainly food for thought, makes perfect sense when you think about it. Quite surprised Watchdog or something similar has made a bigger play on it or indeed that the government hasn't made it law already.

Cheers

Paul

I'm not convinced by the winter tyre argument, I've got Nokian WRG2s on my MX5 and I'm still feeling that the roads are slippy. I think is a build up of the salt mixture, diesel and general grime.

I'm not saying winter tyres aren't better below 7C because IMO they are but the roads are very greasy at the moment.

There is a lot of discussion going on and there are a lot of opinions about winter tyres.
My opinion is that summer tyres perform better on DRY roads when temperature is above minus 2°

It's probably fair to say that new summer tyres are slightly better in the dry when cold. But winter tyres are much better than summer tyres when wet.

The roads are often wet with condensate and salt (as VB mentions) during winter here.

I would strongly recommend the WRG2s, I wanted a tyre that would cope with occasional snow but still provide precise handling. They make the car great in the snow which is saying something given its lightweight and RWD. Handling is still great as well.
