Replace tyres or new alloys

My tyres have now done over 17000 miles and I'm think that all 4 are gonna need replacing pretty soon (std 16" ES alloys).

I'm guessing this is going to cost around £400, but I notice that Halfords do deals where you can buy 17" alloys with tyres (not sure whcih type though) for around the same price. Of course this woul allow me to sell the 16"ers I currently have and possibly get a bit of cash back.

Do people think this is a wise idea - and if I do go up to 17s, will I need to get the speedo re-calibrated at the stealers?

PS - not sure on new style of alloys, depends what they have on special offer in the shop! Oh, and I'm guessing I'll need 205/55 R17s??

I would take a very careful look at the tyres that are supplied with the Halfords deals as they are going to be very budget at that price.

The standard 17s all have 225/45 R17 tyres, and I'm pretty certain the speedo wouldn't need altered if you got tyres this size.

You'd also need to make sure the offset of your new wheels was correct.

Yeah that was the first place I looked! And if I do go for bigger wheels, thats where my current ones will be going.

Just thought, I'll need to replace the spacesaver as well!

Good quality tyres are always worth spending money on.
Have a close look at what you are getting at Halfords.

Yep, there'll be nothing budget about the wheels that go on the Civic. Halfords charge £60 extar to put premium tyres on, opposed to the standard ones that are alrady on (thats for four tyres and not each).

They didn't have too much choice for what I was looking for, so I'm gonna try a few more local dealers before deciding what to do.

This may seem like an odd one but Turriff Tyres - A full range of performance alloys, tyres and exhausts. do great deals they in the far north of Scotland but will ship down. If not them then Pitstop at the MetroCentre are OK on price. Better than Helfrauds anyway.
