Not a word about the handbrake issue i Norway either. It has been a fuel cap mod on our civics, but that's all.

I had to laugh last night. The first thing my Dad said to me was its been on the news that Honda are recalling the Civic cause there is a problem with the handbrake. I then pointed him in the direction of the letter and the info I had already told him for his mate at work.

Bet Honda will be pig sick of all the calls they'll be getting as some news rooms seem to be forgetting that its only ment to be effecting 2006-2007 cars (including some 08 models) but there will be more than a few owners who are not aware of this site and the fact that they haven't and won't have a letter for good reason!

Funny it's so much fuss about the handbrake in UK and dead silence here.
Next year, maybe?
Or maybe because many park their cars in gear? (Well I do...)

I wrote my dealer yesterday to ask them what's about this recall letter.
So far, they didn't receive any complaints at all and they are unaware of any handbrake failures. If it should concern my car, Honda will send me a personal letter they say.
I"m glad however that I'm aware there could be a problem. I take care to put it in gear together with the handbrake when I'm parked before my house. Last week, one of my neighbors experienced a handbrake failure on his car. I heard passing cars honk their horn. When I looked out the window I saw his car in the middle of the street blocking all traffic. Luckily for him, he heard the horn also. My street isn't very well lit at night so one could easily have smashed into his car. Since then, I always put mine in first gear, just to be safe...

Hi Christophe,

Mine is a 1.8 Sport manual gearbox. There's a 07 in the chassis number so build year should be 2007. The serial number is 56801...
I bought it last month in Wetteren (Ost). My Civic was part of a special series (Yumé) they bought for the "Autosalon 2008".
What's the serial number of your car so we can compare...

They've written to me twice now. My dealer also does a fine job of retro-fitting previous mods to my car without me saying a word. Fuel filler mod was one of them, nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard it pop open the first time.

Is the full modification available now?

Today our car rolled off of our drive and onto the drive of the people opposite. Strange thing was that the hand brake was still in position....????

Calling the dealers tomorrow, see what they have to say.

Never had another car roll off my drive as the brakes cooled.. Course I didn't leave it in gear, who does in real life?? Again never had any other cars roll off the drive from the lack of leaving it in gear. They're gonna have to do better than that...

This thing about the handbrake loosing grip when cooling. Surely it is not an issue if the brake is applied with plenty of force, Pottsy wrote somewhere that a force of 20Kg is required. The stretch/tension in the cable must be much greater than the contraction in the discs and brake mechanism.

I have never left my car in gear since I have been driving! That's nearly 5 years of driving...! It's bad practice incase you forget and start the car without the clutch down...

Now I've been driving 7 years and when my instructor used to turn up they would leave the car in gear and apply the handbrake and when I got in I would shut the door, put my belt on, sort the seat and the mirrors, knock the car out of gear, start the engine.

Now you are taught to make sure that the car is out of gear before you start it and I always do this. Seems that people quickly forget what they are taught and you can't tell me that your instructor never told you to make sure the car was not in gear, start the engine, put the clutch in, select first, mirror, signal, check over your shoulder to your blind spot before you move off, if save to do so move off.

Well - you learn how to pass your test... and then you learn how to drive! lol

But yes - I always waggle the stick in the middle before I start the engine!
