Question Spare or not?

Hi Everyone

This is my first post; the Civic is on order for delivery the beginning of May. My question is where do you guys stand on the “no spare wheel with this car sir” do you all buy a spare wheel? Or not, does the so called Instant Mobility System work or is it a waste of time? And last but not least does the car come with Jack & Wheel Brace as it has no spare wheel, or is that an extra as well? This is my first car that has no spare wheel so i'm a little concerned over this.

Thanks Rog

Hi StellaA, and welcome.

We have a thread running at the moment and here is a link to a previous thread**.

Have a click on this link to take you straight there.

**Previous Thread: Punctures

...and here: flat tyre No spare

General thought is that it is a good idea to get the spare.

Good luck.

Hi Allan

Thanks for the info, guess I should have done a search first but I am new to the Civic Forum, and that’s my story and I’m sticking to it What about a Jack & Wheel Brace does the car have them as standard or not?

Honest answer, Go buy the tyre, it is a worthwhile investment. Yes you get the jack and brace it.

Think you mean 'jack and brace', Tom ?. Sorry to be pedantic but don't want to risk confusion

Yes sorry, mind was elsewhere, jack and brace comes with the car as does the tube of mucky stuff. I use my spare for long journeys or abroad, otherwise I leave it out of the car.

I bought the spare almost 2 years ago when I ordered the car new.
I've never ever needed it (up to now), but still think it was £100.00 well spent.
Go for it !

I have opted for the spare too, just in case.

I don't like driving without one even though you have a can of tyre sealant and a compressor supplied by Honda in the boot compartments.

Welcome StellaA

Be safe and get a spacesaver it`s £100 well spent for peace of mind.
Not only does the car come with a jack and wheel brace but you also get an air compressor to pump up your tyres.

Personally I would never be without a spare. I bought a replacement set of alloys and kept one of my original wheels as the spare. If you remove the floor cover it fits straight in. To keep it looking tidy I put a boot liner in and you cannot tell its doesn't have the floor lid. There is still loads of space around the wheel for storage.

I have had to use my spare several times (work in the building trade and visit building sites alot).

Do you mean take the lower boot lid away? I tried to fit a full size 16" wheel before and just couldn't. Could you post a picture which part to take off? Thanks.

The civics sold in UK do not include a spare tire ??? Thats strange...I did not know that... Why do they do that ? For less cost when buying the car ?

I'v got a 1200 bandit bike and when flat tyre, i have a repair kit which does the job real good I would'nt go for a spare tyre and use that extra space in boot for extra carrying capacity ! The repair kit in the civic's are real good quality and can run for thousands of miles, now all depends if the puncture is clean or not.

Are you saying you can run for thousands of miles on a tyre repaired with the can of foam.

oh ... sorry !! I dont use foam at all, in fact in my motobike tool kit, i have some rubber thread with special glue and also a special tool to introduce that tread inside the tyre as long as the hole is'nt too big, must not be thicker than a fat nail. Then as you put air pressure inside again, the part of that special rubber squashes against the inside part of the tyre with the glue. Then from the outside visible part of tyre, you just cut off the remaining rubber thead and this is very reliable for many milage, i'v done it a few times. Now regarding the foam can, thats just only good enough to get you to the next petrol station to get that tyre repared properly.

In the U.K., They sold a Kit like that for repairing car tyres.
It could be bought from Halfords etc, up until about 15 + years ago,
when it was made illegal.

That is still the way tyre dealers repair punctures.
