Unhappy Binding Front Brake

Hi All

This is my first post, so be kind. I've been the proud owner of a Civic Type-R (2005 plate, 20,000 miles) for the past 12 months, but have recently have had no end of bother with a binding brake on the front passenger side.

It seems ok once you start off but it gradually starts to get worse the further that you drive. After driving a couple of miles the caliper is red hot, and it's stuck on.

The local main dealer so-called cleaned up the caliper and replaced the front pads, as the others had cracked due to the heat. This didn't solve the problem. They then recommended that I change the caliper, this I didn't believe could be possible on a low mileage well maintained car. So I got a second opinion, I was told changing the brake lines might sort the problem. It didn't. So now i'm left with the final option of replacing the caliper, main dealer price for this is close to £470.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

Any help appreciated as the current trail and error approach to fixing the problem at the moment is costing me a fortune.

Someone who owned a 7th gen may be able to help you as the FN2 Type R wasn't released until the first quater of 2007

Hey Martin. Welcome to the forum. As for the binding brake problem. Without seeing the caliper it's difficult to diagnose the problem.

It does sound like your caliper either needs replacing or a rebuild.

For a second hand caliper hit eBay breakers or try the CTR owners forum or Type-R owners forums. These guys have plenty of info (just like here) and bits which might be of use.

When a friend had a similar issue with his S2K brake caliper he got a second hand one and replaced it. £470 is a proper chunk of money. I dare say you could collect a pair of Spoon monoblock calipers for that sort of cash.

Hi all

I contacted Honda today and they are willing to pay the full cost of the new caliper (about £420 incl vat apparently), I just have to pay the labour charges. Been quoted £60 on labour as it is only an hour long job apparently. So I can live with that.

Hopefully this will solve the problem. I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi all

Just to update Caliper was replaced and all seems to be fine at the moment. Not binding at the moment so fingers crossed will stay that way.
