Replacing the Sub frame due to clicking

Hi there,

I was wondering with ref to this wiki

Front end knock/tap when brake/accelerate/turn - Civinfo Wiki

How much work would be envolved in replacing the sub frame, ie what parts will they have to remove, will it effect the tracking etc.

I have the small metal click sound but am wondering if it is worth having it done?

Any help would be most appreciated!

It should be done under warranty by the dealer.

petecivic,
A small metal click sound as you describe it could come from almost anywhere, why would you think it was the subframe? Dealers have things called chassis ears which they can use to locate the source of a sound. Trouble is, I think it's a time consuming job so they are probably reluctant to do a thorough diagnosis.

Maybe I'm already paranoid but check your windscreen cowl before you rip out the subframe

Yeah i have done the windscreen tape 'mod' and its a new click that i can feel thru my feet when changing directions ie stop then reverse. its coming from the drivers side wheel/ feet area and i can hear it louder with the window down.

I have found that the problem (according to the wiki) is the sub frame bushes. i was hoping that because my problem sounds exactly the same as others on here i would be able to get a heads up on the soloutions etc.

I would really like to know if they could just replace the bushes, and leave the sub frame alone.....

thanks again any comments def most welcome....

HI petecivic, I have booked my car into the dealers for exactly the same clicking problem. It's booked for Thursday and Friday of this week. I will let you know what the dealer finds.

Usually the bushes come with the front LCAs and not the subframe. I'd suggest to leave the subframe alone because it is a really heavy intervention. I'm not sure, but I beliene the steering rack is mounted on it...

If the technicians find out that the problem comes from the bushings, these will come either alone or with the LCA. The question is whether the bushes replacement will change the clicking noise. The new ones should be of a improved material, I guess, or else the noise will reappear.

I also would like to know what work is involved, what parts they remove etc... Not that I have this particular problem, it's just out of general interest. I thought the subframe supported the entire engine?

These pics are from EPC.

The first one is the subframe and the second is the front knuckle and control arm.

As I can see, one bushing is attached to a part of the subframe and the other one is to the control arm. Judging from my experience on a previous civic, these bushes are not sold as separate, because their outer metal shell are pressed tight to the relevant suspension piece.

The encouraging thing is that the subframe is separated to 3 pieces and probably there is not any need to dismantle half of your car to change the bushing (if needed).

Overall, I have a lot of doubts that by changing the bushings, you'll get your problem fixed. These bushings are not expendable and their lifetime is not short. I'd suggest to tighten all of the subframe bolts and lubricate the subframe bushes and see how it will evolve.

Hi petecivic, just to let you know the clicking noise has been resolved. The mechanic found a loose bolt underneath the car. The bolt goes through the cross member and into the front sub frame. It is located just left of the drivers feet. No parts were needed.

same kind of fix as for me then. two screws on the lower arm scrubbing on the subframe were swapped. noise instantly disappeared.
