[Brakes] Brake pads

Just had my Honda Civic 1.8 sport serviced at local dealer, (24000 miles)
They have put on the report sheet that the front and rear pads are at the amber state?
Does this mean that they will be ok to the next service.
Also i have read that when the pads wear down there is a device on the pads that makes a noise?? could someone explain how this works.

The noise is when the backing plate the brake pad is bonded to rubs on the disc because the pad is worn away.

Not sure about the 'amber' state, I suppose if they thought they wouldn't last they would have stung you for a new set at this service.

You must be doing some amount of heavy braking pal..

Mine was serviced about 3 weeks ago with 21k miles. Stealers said pad wear was ok about 60% wear on front I think and 40% on the rears... but got the green tick..! Still bites well when braking.

Some cars have wear clips which are attached to the pads. When the pads wear down to near done the clips should scream loudly off the discs preventing you getting to the metal 2 metal stage.. Not sure if the Civic has these thou.
Check these guy's out for brake shoes. Hopefully they should have these for the current civic now.

some civs do seem to eat pads

there have been reports of them being marked as fine at one service, then chewing their way through the rest of the pad in about 5 minutes...

There is no wear clip, but you will notice a noise under braking when they start to get close to needing replacing

Keep an ear open!

can someone do a how to on replacing the brake pads? Mine are starting to make the noise and I want to know what to do and what I need before I try tackling it

I'm guessing you guys have never changed pads on a car before? Its quite a straight forward job and changing the pads on the Civic is no different to other cars.

I'm not changning mines yet so can't post pics for you, sorry.

Acht aye after driving and fiddling with cars n bikes for over 20+ yrs I've lost count how many brake pads I've changed over the years and for others.

I thought it would be a good idea, for "virgin" brake pad changers to post some pics.

Dont do it yourself get a local backstreet garage to do it much easier, just buy your pads online. had mine changed and fronts went ok but rears looked to be a real pain in the arse the guy proper struggled even using the right tools which you will only have to buy yourself anyway. you have been warned

But if you already change brakes then you probably already have the tools. I know I do

I would opt for green stuff and fit them myself, but I did notice that my dealer is charging £65 for a set of front or rear pads fitted. Seems like a good deal to me. And it wasn't too espensive for disks and pads fitted.

Other great thing with doing them yourself, at least you know that your alloys are not going to be damaged on removal or having them left lying somewhere! Or if your alloys have fused then they use whatever means to get the wheels off.
