Official space saver size
Hi, I'm looking at getting a space saver and I contacted a dealer to find what the size of the wheel was. They told me it was a 135x80x16 but I have seen ones on ebay that supposedly are for the current Civic but they measure 135x70x16.
Is there some nice person out there with a spare they got from Honda who could confirm the actual size of it, or does it make no difference whether it is 70 or 80?? |

I can't see any harm as your only supposed to use it to get you to somewhere safe or to have the tyre replaced or repaired and your only allowed to go 50mph for safety reasons so I would think fine.

Fair enough Pottsy. But would it make that much difference to the diff or VSA given that the '80' space saver is already so radically different in size to the fitted wheels?

Yes it would, although the space saver tyre is a different width, the overall height of the wheel tyre combination is as near as damn it in overall diameter to the wheel and tyre combinations on all civic models. A 16" wheel fitted with a 135/70/16 tyre would be over an inch smaller in diameter than the correct size spacesaver tyre, a 135/80/16. |

The space saver fits in the boot well because it is narrow enough to fit under the boot floor as you put it in then drop into the well at the edge nearest you. If that makes sense. A standard size wheel won't because of its width. Look at these sizes for standard wheel and tyre combination overall diameters. Standard CTR size 225/40/18 = 225mm x 40% = 90mm which is the height of the side wall, so overall diameter is 90mm + 90mm + (18 x 25.4mm) 457.2mm = 637.2mm Standard spacesaver 135/80/16 = 108mm + 108mm + 406.4mm = 622.4mm The space saver you quoted 135/70/16 = 94.5mm + 94.5mm + 406.4mm = 595.4mm So you can see the difference between overall diameter of my road wheels and my standard spacesaver is 14.8mm, which is ok, if I were to use the spacesaver you have quoted it would be 41.8mm on diameter, but approx 131mm on rolling circumference which is too much. Aha! I thought the full-sized wheel didn't fit in the back because the diameter was to wide, but I now get it. It's because it's wider than the space saver along the face of the tyre.
Have I finally got it? |

Can somebody clarify if the space saver for 16" wheels is the same space saver for 17" wheels?
ie. I bought a Civic with 16" wheels and got the space saver and I'm changing to a Type S with 17" alloys - so will it be the same space saver? Cheers. |

The tyre makes up the difference in overall diameter/rolling circumference. If you look here you can see the differences are negligible. http://www.civinfo.com/wiki/index.ph...res_and_Wheels |
