GM Handbrakes also duff
I see that Auto Express have reported that some GM cars have been recalled for the very same reasons as the Civic, ie cars rolling away. See History of recalls
What I find amazing is that Honda and GM are suggesting that the CORRECT way to apply the handbrake is to haul it on over the ratchets. Don't they know that prolonged adoption of this method will wear away the ratchets and, guess what, you then have a handbrake that doesn't work! I can testify to this as I had an old wreck of a Singer Gazelle (I know I'm giving my age away) where the ratchets were completely worn away (not by me I hasten to add - I bought it like this) and the only way to use the handbrake was to prop a lump of wood between it in its 'on' position and the housing underneath. |
