Bump Stops??

Hey all -

My civic is currently in for its 37500 service and the dealer just rang to say that it is in need of some warranty work on the front bump stops...

This means nothing to me - not being mechanically savvy! I know that there has been some threads on squeeking and clunks from the suspension, but I cant find anywhere what the hell a bumpstop is!?!?!

Anyone that can help?!
Thanks!

There is loads on the fault ang bugs forum, but they are the whit or yellow plastic bits on the top of the suspension struts (certainly front, not sure about rear).

If they are loose, then when you go over a pothole or speed bump, you hear a 'clank' sound when the strut expands again.

Sorry, but I don't have any photos.

Found the following definition on the web:

Bump Stop:
Rubber bumpers (often cone or wedge shaped) on the chassis that limit suspension travel. "Bottoming out" the suspension means hitting the bump stops.

I had bump stops replacement when I first got my Civic as there was a knocking noise. When the noise returned within a day or so I was told then whole shock absorber (i think) was replaced. New one is yellow, old one was white, or other way round. anyway, no problems now. All was done under warranty. I heard it was something to do with them not being able to fully cope with the heavier front of a diesel.

Had mine replaced yesterday under warranty on a 07 civic, apparently they were found missing when the handbrake mod was carried out the previous week

Asked dealer to check for noise from engine a few weeks ago, evidently it was HUK policy to change bumps stops when a noise was refered to coming from front!Well now I have the constant thudding from the suspension(front and back) that I did'nt have before my original enquiry - its driving me to distraction!!!. Is there a diy remedy - like removing the stops altogether? My advice is think seriously if you have a noise, you will probably end up with problems later on!Incidently the dealer was a bit negative when I asked whether the shocks should be changed.

My car is going back next week after its service today as I informed them of the suspension noise and they told me the bump stops needing replacing.

Had my 1st service today and one of my front Bump Stops has apparently dropped and needs to be replaced when they get chance. Doesn't cause any handling problems they say

Had mine looked at today..Yes both bump stops have dropped at the front..
They are now submitting a warrranty claim to Honda.
So I now have to wait to get the work authorised.
I would have thought that it was cut and dried..
Its clearly a fault; not wear and tear!!

It should be cut and dried but the dealer still needs the work authorised through HUK before they do anything. this way, not only can they claim through Honda rather than you paying but HUK also get to log it as another 'repeat offender' and work on a long term fix if needs be.

Sounds like the dealer is going on the side of caution - perhaps they have been caught out before - undertaking work thinking it would be covered by HUK, but it wasn't...

Back on topic please..
So...could they have failed because of crap components then?
I'm not the only one to have this happen to.
