Rear Tyre wear
Just replaced front tyres after 30K miles from new (Michelin). Asked the tyre place to put rears on front and new on back, as you do. Fitter pointed out that rears had a stepped wearing pattern on inside edge, bad enough to vibrate etc if they were put on the front. Anyone had similar issue or ideas?

Hi Mike,
I have exactly this problem detailed here: Droning/Roaring Noise & Refuelling and here: Springs Fitted Upside Down At Rear!! For info, I still haven't had the 4-wheel alignment done as I don't have £65 spare to gamble with at the mo. I tried switching the rears to the front but this just made the noise & vibration problem worse. Please let me know how you get on with any investigations. This came up in another thread somewhere. My daughter's Leon had the very same problem and the best info' I could find was that it can be characteristic of Torsion-beam rear suspension, made worse by wide tyres. It is recognised to the extent that I believe tyres are available designed to minimise the effect.

Yes I had uneven tyre wear on the rears. They were worn on the inside lots more than the outside.
Anyway I did change the rears at 75000 miles, along with the fronts and also had the 4 wheel alignment done and it now seems fine. The roaring noise from the rear has gone and the new rubber has settled very well. |
