Had my car back from the dealer yesterday after the handbrake mod was done, checks were also carried out on the rear shocks due to a loud knocking noise when reversing off my drive. He informed me that the shocks were not from the affected batch, the hatch was adjusted as he said this was probably the cause. As expected while reversing off my drive today the noise was still evident. If it is not the shocks any ideas on what it could be.

I have a similar problem and according to my Dealer they have other customers who also have this problem. What they have said is that Honda are currently reviewing this but have not yet issued any directives. This seems to be at variance with what I have read on here as it appears that some Dealers are fitting replacement shock absorbers.

Thanks for the reply, will be visiting the dealer again next week to see if anything else can be done. The only problem is that the noise disappears after driving for a short distance and they cannot replicate it. Will keep you posted.

Spoke to my dealer yesterday about this, he said Honda were aware but had told them not to replace shocks as same problem would recur. They are working on a fix for it.

Ha! Wow so it's not just me!
Mine was in for it's handbrake re-call on Wednesday - And while there I asked them to look at the rear suspension as it was STILL knocking - after they had apparently repaired this already in a previous re-call when I got the car... When I picked the car up the salesman told me one of the rear seats was "loose"... and that this may have been causing the knocking... lol I told him that I very much knew about the constant problems Honda were having with the rear suspension and that I very much doubted this was to do with seats! Then he told me they had "tightened" the rear shocks... this did nothing as I got the knocking when I pulled out of my driveway the next morning...! |

Look at this
I had a knocking over pot holes, 1st thing in the morning and sometimes as I turned the engine off.
I tracked it down to the rear exhaust rubber hanger. I wouldn't have thought a rubber hanger could be suspect but such is the shape and rigid nature that it allowed the exhaust hanging bracket to effectively knock on the chassis hanger. The Rigid rubber was acting as a solid 'hard 'piece of rubber and the knock was transferring straight through. I slid it off and carved the two inner parts of the rubber that were touching away. Hey presto ...........knocking gone. Just another area you could explore |

As fickel mentions, it is most likely to be the rubber exhaust hanger if it only happens when the car first moves. Suspension noise diagnosis - Civinfo Wiki

I have raised the same with my 10k dealer sold 3 door that I picked up on Monday (6 days ago) and the service guy gave a load of cack about it only seems to be reported with 5 door models.
He said he was not aware of 3 doors suffering the problem. I think there is a nylon / soft material that the whole shock / spring sits in that is not stong enough, hence wear and then when the car sits and settled. When you move it.. crrreeeaaaaakkkk! |

Complained to my stealer about unwanted noises from Millie and they re-jigged something to do with the exhaust.
.....no cure here tho'! ......still has the same noise when coming off the drive. "Better to keep your mouth shut and appear to be stupid, Than to open it and remove all doubt!" |

Rear Shocks
After several months of bring my car to several dealers, I've had subframe bolts tightned and changed and the exhaust frame tighted, I've had front dampers replaced, and everytime I brought it to a dealer they insisted that they was nothing wrong with the rear suspension.
I phoned Honda Direct and they right away admitted there was a problem with the rear shocks and that the replacement ones would develop the same noise, they told me to tell the dealer this and that I would be notified when they came up with a permament fix. Phoned the dealer they admitted that they were aware of the problem all along and that when a fix was released that I would be notified. So if you have any bother, just ring Honda direct. The number is on the website. |

Interesting - the story I was fed after the first time I had the rear shocks changed (with no problems when I first complained about a knocking noise) was that the replacements were an 'improved' type and wouldn't make the same noise (which they did after a bit).
When I then complained about this replacement set I was told that I already now had the improved type and Honda UK wouldn't authorise any further change. After several further complaints it was agreed that they would be changed again (no further explanation other than that after my repeated complaint had been passed onto Honda they had finally let the dealer change then a second time) - no information on whether these were the same or 'further improved' - simply told that Honda had now agreed to my request for another change. The noises again came back after a couple of months. In fairness - it was only a minor annoyance and I was probably more annoyed by their attitude than by the noise, though it was worse when the car was laden. I no longer have the Civic - but if I did - it would still be needing doing to satisfy me. I have a theory that they would just keep changing them reluctantly until the warranty ran out - then it would have been all my problem! A question one should ask is "would a noisy shock absorber constitute an MOT failure?" I have a suspicion that without knowing why it was noisy, a conscientious MOT inspector might fail it on the grounds that the noise could indicate a problem developing internally or excessive wear.
