alternative spacesavers

although this subject has been thrashed here before can anyone offer advice on alternative spacesavers bought secondhand from ebay or scrap yard.
For instance will a five stud 16" spacesaver from an R type fit the civic? would a SS from an Accord fit? and are there SSs from other vehicles that could be used on the civic without going to the expense of a new purchase?.
Tried to get this info from my local dealer without success, he couldn't even tell me the size of the spacesaver he offerred at £100.

Regards

Will the wheels fit and whether they are correct for the car are two different questions.
Many Honda 5 stud wheels will fit, but in order to drive 'safely' the overall rolling radius needs to be maintained at a reasonable level. By using one of the wrong size may get you mobile but be quite dangerous to you and other road users.
As the wheel is only £100 is it worth the risk to get one the wrong size with no history?

Hi MC,
I think if I can get competitively priced secondhand space saver wheel of similar size and spec to a new Honda supplied wheel - then the answer to your question is yes. Lets not forget that the £100 is additional to our significant investment in a car with no spare.

Space Saver

COULD ANY ONE HELP US PLEASE

if anyone has a space saver wheel could you give us the size of tyre and rim size
i will be taking delivery of my civic 2.2i ex on march 28th
and could do with the size so that i can get one ordered .
i agree why should we be hit with the expence when we have paid so much for the car .i would rather pay 150 pounds than give it to some one else than the car dealer. please remember that is what they want us to do give them more of our hard earnt cash

kind regards peter

The English in your post is a bit muddled in places?

The reason you should be hit with the expense when you "paid so much for the car" is simple. It is clearly spelt out in black and white that that car (that costs so much) does NOT come with a space saver spare wheel. This information is freely available to all potential owners before they commit to buying the car

So commiting to buy is accepting that the space saver is extra. Hence if you want one after commiting to buy then you have effectivly already agreed to pay extra for it.

Hope someone can help you with the rolling radius of the space saver, but if you really want one then Honda's £100 is not too much to pay for a wheel that you already know is designed for the car.

Hello Civpilot,
While I agree the correct space saver for the car should be used, what I cannot understand is why you come on so strong, not only on this thread but others you have subscribed to.It's nice to be nice.Have a good day.

I agree with Civpilot, I'll be ordering a Honda spare wheel when I get my car - no chance I'm taking the risk with the foam incase a tyre shreds.

The foam is a "nice to have" the space saver is essential. I got got mine thrown in in the price as well as an extra cigar lighter and bluetooth. Just ask!

Peter

at the risk of causing offence, I would suggest that your gripe should be with buyacar.com (and / or wherever else it doesn't mention the lack of spare tyre).

It is information which is readily available, and it is becoming increasingly common for manufacturers to not supply one.
Indeed, on the Honda website, it is clearly marked as an option, not as standard fit.

This is not great - and many would argue that it should be standard - but at the end of the day, it's not up to Honda what buyacar.com do or do not tell potential buyers

Replace spacesaver with alloy

I have been reading the many posts about the spare wheel and have just had a thought.
I have an ES model with the standard 16" alloys on it. There's a number of owners upgrading their standard wheels to a more personal choice. Why not offer these surplus wheels singularly to 4 owners who want a spare, and don't want to pay the whole £100 + to Honda. Then you will have 5 Identical Alloys maybe at a more acceptable cost. I am assuming that the wheel housing would comfortably seat an alloy wheel. I would be happy to purchase 1/4

Just a thought................

*creeps into the thread*

Just another question if you have the honda spare presumably you then fill the clever little hidey hole thing in the boot with it? I want to get a spare however I was planning on dropping that bit down and sitting the dog cage in it occassionally. (although not for at least 6 months)

Also if you use the foam on a puncture does that then mean you need a whole new tire? (sorry if this is a bit dim)

The space saver size I have is T135/80 R16 101M. I have 205/55 R16 91V alloys.

The saver is bolted into the clever under bit of the boot, and doesn't leave much space, although I've seen people use it for First Aid kits etc...
Most tyre dealers would probably not repair the tyre after putting sealant in it, as it needs cleaning etc...
I opted for the space saver (and got it thrown in the package FOC) in case of blowouts, where sealant just wouldn't work.

I might see what I can get out of the dealer when I pick the car up then I will go for the cute young girl face worried what will happen if I have a flat tire with no spare! If he wont chuck it in I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and pay

I'd call them up and ask them to get it in for when you pick it up (and fit it of course!) Perhaps you can try the cute young girl voice instead to get it for free
