Thumbs down Uneven tyre wear

After approx 8000miles I noticed my front tyres were wearing unevenly - obviously a small bump had knocked the tracking out and they were wearing more on the insides. Had them swapped front to rear and retracked.

At 12K I fitted a new front pair (swapped with the old rears), had them tracked and in less than 1K I am still seeing the same uneven wear (approx 1mm more on the inside of both tyres). There have been no serious bumps or knocks. Considering the price of PS2's I can't afford to leave it so I took it back to the tyre deport and they advised I go back to Honda. Its now booked in for a geometry check.

Nothing should have been damaged from the small bump it has experienced - anyone else had odd tyre wear I recommend you check as its not obvious until it's too late (read expensive)

miggins, We too have uneven tyre wear which the honda dealer confirmed... they have done some strange tyre swappage that i don't fully get, they have changed the right hand side for new ones and the old back ones on the left..... as if that will solve the pulling/tracking issue we are still having....(even tho honda uk say that both front wheel and 4 wheel and geometry are all true)

I don't know about Civics but there is an excellent geometry expert at STS Watford who goes by the name of Tony.

What he doesn't know isn't worth knowing. He also offers a free 'fine tune' after a few thousand miles to ensure that the geo is still correct.

>> THIS << is his website.

I know of people who travel hundreds of miles for his services.

Thanks Kremmen - I went to a deccent place in Northampton but for obvious reasons as its still under warranty I want to see what Honda have to say.

At £145 a tyre retail I NEED better mileage. If they were disappearing purely due to my driving I would accept the consequences!

czechplastik Is it enthusiastic driving or do you believe there is a problem? My first 6K was heavy on my tyres and the tracking going out just after that finished them off. Now they are wearing about an extra 1mm on the inside in under 1000 miles.

I'm running 18" wheels - anybody else? What are the wear characteristics on yours?

BTW: the rears on the Civic aren't adjustable - unless you shim. Unlike the previous model!

Well i mean obviously I'm enthusiastic but 6k is a bit unusual, Its probably a combination of me and something amiss, i thought the VSA would help reduce wear. Clearly not!

As posted elseware (sic. sorry!) I have burnt through pilot sports in 6500 miles on the front, having lost the first primacy's to a nail... Enthusiastic driving yes, mentalist far from so I was a bit miffed.

C.Plastik I feel your pain, the rears still have 3-4mm to go after 13,000 miles!!

Cheers

Elis

Strange... I've got 25K on my original tyres (Pilot sports) and I'm only just down to 4.5mm at the front, and 5mm at the rear. I like to "make progress" when conditions allow and will always take the country road if available. I have a couple of different driving qualifications above the normal uk licence and in the past I have been used to a fair bit of track driving here and there so know how to make tyres work without raggin them. But even so, 6.5k and tyres already shagged??? erm... WOW

I guess what I'm saying is that either I have a super special set of tyres/superhuman ability (yeah, right) or you guys need to either get your cars checked pronto or need to think about trying to drive a bit more smoothly.

Not dissing but I really don't understand how you can wear out a set of tyres in 6500miles when I can make mine last over 25000miles and I dont hang about when the conditions are right. The only car I've ever known eat tyres as quickly as yours was and Aussie HSV GTS owned by a guy I once knew. He could kill a set in about 8k.... but he had almost 700bhp and never used the traction control. I know of Ferrari owners who get more than 6k out of a set of driven tyres.

Ps. As for the un-even wear, also think of trying Micheldever tyres if your in the south, they have the best Geomety set up I've ever used. Their website appears to be in the process of a rebuild at the moment so heres thier contact info....

Sorry to keep harping on about the Lexus but until March I can only use them as a comparison.

The IS200 also has a factory problem with the geometry that can cause the front tyres inner edge to go with enthusiastic driving at about 8K miles.

I went to see Tony at STS Watford not long after I got the car and he put it on his computer geo diagnostic. All the angles came up 'red' on the display.

Tony reset the whole thing and I am currently on 32K on my original Dunlop SP9000 tyres.

At the last service the rears had 5mm left whilst the fronts were down to 3mm, which at 32K is OK with me.

This whole thing made me go back to a copy of evo last night. They had an article on the new MX5 where they took a readers car to a geometry check up right from the dealer. All the angles were out and the car needed some serious tweaking to get to "manufacturers" allowed settings.

Wondering if the odd Civic has slipped through the same way?

Strange. Miggins and elisgriffiths both have the diesel version. Could it be all that torque that's eating through your tyres? Just a thought.

High torque is actually the best friend of "smooth driving" so no, nothing to do with excessive torque at all. the more power you have the easier it is to keep things smooth as its easier to... erm... keep your pace up

I have the diesel and am a reasonably reserved driver but I decided to rotate my tyres last week at 10k miles and I noticed that the front (now rear) ones would probably only give me about another 4k miles.

Am I right, can we say that this is only a problem of the diesel Civics?
the geometry dosen't matces to the extra weight or what??

ok

I have just checked a Nissan 350Z today.
Rears were worn completely but equally,
front were not worn so hard but on the inside both of them were more worn than on the outside... difference was easy to see...

So.... could it be normal if you drive hard with blinking VSA?

How about you smooth driving daddys, girlies do you have uneven tyre wear?
