Looking to see if anyone can help out here... Had the car MOT'd in Dec and the the rear breaks were replaced.... Mid Jan found to the contrary that they hadn't? Been charged but not done as while driving home from work realised that there was metal to metal grinding coming from the rear.... Took it back to the garage and as it had fecked the rear discs, they replaced them FOC.... All of the crap from the metal to metal had gone onto my alloys and now the rear offside has rust on that I can't remove.... I've tried copious amounts of degreaser and even had Scotchbrite (I know, Cardinal Sin >) but it won't budge... Any ideas - tips on how to get the rust off?
hi there unfortunately when metal fileings come of of the disk they are hot and melt in to the paint/powder coating on the wheels
if it has imbedded itself deep enough in to the paint then a refirb/repaint will be the only way to fix
I had this happen on my old frontera, changed out the pads on the rear and one of the pads crumbled and lost its friction material a week later, by the time i noticed what was happening it knackered the disc and all the hot fillings from the metal to metal melted their way into the powdercoat/laquer on the wheel, only a wheel refurb will get rid of it.
Not what you want to hear but pretty sure the IRONX isnt going to do anything, specially if you have already scrubbed it.
i take it the wheel feels like sandpaper?
If that fails, acid based cleaner but they're not good for the coatings. That said, I still have some of the original acid based Wonder Wheels formula and it does come in handy when even IronX fails. Just don't leave it on too long or you'll get white residue on the clear coat that's really difficult to get off.
I did and they gave me a set of Discs and Pads FOC as a bribe, dare say I'll not be taking my car there again...
The week earlier I was changing the back pads, I did the offside but something came up and I had to put all back together and leave it with just one side done... The MOT was the next day so I explained to the garage that the offside was new but the nearside wasn't and that the pads were in the boot... Car failed for brakes which I knew they would so they said they'd fit the Nearside... 3 weeks later the terrible grinding noise and on inspection, the offside that I had changed myself were down to the metal? so they'd taken new pads out from the day before when I'd fitted them and put in old one's? HTF they'd done that I don't know but it destroyed the discs...
To be fair, I'm not going to attempt wheel refurbs or anything as I'm trading the old Girl in soon for a 9G
At the end of the day, I got a new set of discs thrown in..
