Shredded tyres

OK you've all been debating the pro's and con's of spare wheels, goo, gunk and run flats. But how many people have been stranded because their tyre was shredded and could not be repaired. Perhaps we could have a vote and see if it is as common as we think it might be, Or have honda done their homework!

I have never seen a torn or shredded tyre in my life.

Does that count?

In my 11 years of driving I have had to change wheels 3 times, all on my 97 Civic. In all 3 cases the culprit was debris on the motorway (at 90mph) or road, & in all 3 cases resulted in 10mm+ gashes in the side wall.

I carry a space-saver.

I have shredded one..... barbed wire on the inside of a mini roundabout...blew out at low speed as it ripped the sidewall.... but it was one in a million.....

did enjoy asking the tyre place to repair it.......

I do a lot of motorway miles so had the spare in the Peugeot (never used it in 70000 miles) and now in the Civic....

I shredded my inside front tyre, in my Mondeo, when I ran over a trolley jack that had fallen off a lorry onto the inside lane of the M6. No amount of gunge would have fixed that!

The tyre was absolutely torn away from the wheel and could not have been repaired (it also frightened the life out of me ...it was dark and raining).

Having said that, it's the only time it's happened to me in almost 30 years of driving.

I've had (from memory) 2 punctures in 20 years of driving.

both a single nail / screw.

both were slow enough that I was able to (carefully and slowly!) get to the nearest garage when I noticed, pump it up, then get to a trye place.

I've also only had 2 punctures in the last 10 years or so and the first one would definately not have been fixed by the kit.

Puncture happened on a motorway and by the time I had realised and pulled to the hard shoulder the sidewall was split.

= I'm getting the spare.

I'm driving since more than 20 years now... Had three punctures up to now, all where slow enough to let me park in safe place and to change the wheel. Never had a problem with the last car, spare wheel never used (and it was an alloy !)... So I'm happy with the system honda give us.

If I've a major problem with a tyre I call my SOS N° and all problems are solved in less than 30mn.

In 40 years driving I must have had 20 puctures, two of these would not have been repairable with the gunk. I got the spare wheel for peace of mind, just like 40 years membership of the AA, I have never called them out but still join.

Had a blow-out at 70 in the fast lane about 15 years ago, the tyre was a bit shredded after that. Since then, just a couple of your average punctures from metal studs and plastics bits in the sidewall.
PS: I don't like the way that car manufacturers are skimping on space saver tyres for the sake of space and weight, and replacing them with cans of gunk.

Four years ago when I had my Focus I remember thinking I could hear a hissing sound at a junction not long after going round a large roundabout and thinking that the steering felt very light. Stopped, got out to find a piece of angle iron protruding from the offside front tyre. If I pulled it the hissing got worse so I left it in and managed to get to the ford garage about a mile down the road.

There's no way the 'get you home' system would have coped with that.

I have also had a large nail giving a slow puncture but just changed wheels.

I would like a spare wheel but the cost is putting me off a bit - I have accord alloys on my civvie and a spare wheel and tyre will cost approx £300. So if the worst happens it will be a call out job to honda assist.

I've had 2 punctures in my 18 months of driving!

both just screws in the wheel though.
On leaving the car park at work my collegue managed to drive over a piece of metal and rip is tyre open; had a spare but I don't think gunk would have worked.

Lippy - the space saver should work anyway!! You realise that Honda assist may get you home but they won't be able to sort your tyre out?

UK Roads...

I've ask around me to know how many puncture/severe puncture/destroy tyres people have met during they driving life. For the younger one (less than 30...) most of them no puncture at all, some with one or two... The older one may have had more puncture, but have seen an huge improvement the last 10 years with no or one minor puncture...

I'm maybe wrong but reading this thread it may occure that puncture risk is higher on UK roads ... It's a feeling I've no figures to prove it.

I've ask my dealer what will do Honda assist in this case. He told me that they must do whatever possible is to allow us to carry on our trip. Ok in case of very bad luck (destroying your tyre at 3:00 AM in the middle of nowhere) They take you to an hotel untill your car is repaired... maybe not the best solution but against it's a quastion of statistic. Zero risk dont exist so we have to live with

The Space saver will still work, yes it looks like you are driving around with a wheel stolen from a 1954 Beige Morris Minor but it will get you home!

GG I don't have a space saver either - I have a completely empty boot except for the gunk and tyre inflater in the side pockets. The get you home kit wouldnt have worked for either of the punctures I had. So if necessary I'd get honda assist to take me to a tyre place at my destination or nearby.

Reading this thread again is bringing me nearer to getting that spare wheel......

I had two punctures on my previous Civic - both required new tyres. One would not have been fixable with the gunk, the other might have been.

In over 30 years driving (about 15 punctures in total) - I would say that 50% of punctures have been unrepairable. I believe that only a few of the unrepairables would have been fixable with the gunk.

I would not drive a long distance without a spare wheel. Just too much inconvenience if it can't be changed - especially on a Sunday!

In 17 years I've had 4 3 would have been repairable with the gunk and one shredded on my discovery which is not bad realy as for the first 10 years I was a field engineer doing about 50K miles a year these days I tend to average about 30K a year so thats well over half a million miles!
