Bump Stops

I get a loud knock from the front off side when coming off wide speed humps or when going over pot holes, I know many of you have reported this problem before, but I have looked at the front struts on my car, on the top of the gaiters there is a yellow rubber ball, is this the bump stop?
On the passengers side the ball is attached to the top of the strut, but on the drivers side the gaiter can be pulled down (the ball is not attached to the strut top), does anyone know how to fir it back on?

I'd take it to your Dealer. Let them check it out.

Ours was in for it's first service last week and to have just what you describe sorted out - they fixed a 'cap' on the top of the damper and it's been quiet ever since. Much better ride too.

Question

Mine was in today for it's 20k service. They didnt find anything wrong in the suspension or the front shocks. They suspected the sound might be coming from the tires .. weird

Yep the bump stop was detached from the strut top, they fitted it back on and all is well, no knocks.
I forgot to ask how they refitted it.

Noisy Suspension.......

Hi all
Apprently, the bump stops are often loose from birth! Once back in place, all is deemed to be well (even if the noises do not go away!!!).

Anyway, here's a good one, on the rear springs, they can often be fitted 180 degrees wrong and the top of the spring does therefore not sit into the area it should do!!

I'm still not happy with the nosies that occur, and turning the radio up is not really the answer

Keep on nagging!

Cheers
Neil

Ive notice a knocking/tapping from one of my front shocks.

Checked it at the weekend and I have something loose as well.

Its as described above, and is attached to a corrugated sleeve. Off to the dealers I go I think.

Update.

Went round to the dealers at lunch time.

A technician refixed the bump stop, only took a couple of minutes. He said they can pop out sometimes! bit worrying that.

I have a question, please ignore my ignorance, but is the fact that the bump stop was loose for a period of time mean that I may have damage caused to my suspension as a result?

Hi Lovedog

I have just had my front shock absorber replaced. I was told at the time of the test drive (which was to determine whether there was something wrong or not) that all civics make this noise. It would seem that they are designed to bottom out. Strange I know but thats how they work. With the new shock in place mine still makes a noise but not as much as before. A loose bump stop shouldn't damage the front suspension but I would make sure that it was put back in place.

Mine is also loose on the passenger side. Going in to the dealers on Friday so will let you all know what they say about it. Still got a creaking rear first thing in the morning which they are looking at too. At leat they had the sense this time to keep it overnight tomorrow night!

Well after the dealer reattached the bump stop it lasted less than a week and it came loose again the knock returned.

I have requested that they change the strut, the dealer now wants to examine it before they will do anthing. God knows why you can see and feel the problem in 15 seconds. Originaly they suggested taking the strut apart and replacing the bump stop. But they have no courtesy cars available so I have to wait till I can leave it with them.

As for damaging the shock, YES it can, if the bump stop is detached from the strut top, water and dirt can get onto the seals at the top of the shock and cause premature wear leading to the shock leaking oil.

It would sem that Honda have a lot of suspension problems with the CIVIC and are beating around the bush, there seems to be no coherent response from the dealers.

Hi Slowhand

Yes, I agree, if the bump stop is not permanently attached wear will result. I also agree that Honda have a problem with front and rear shocks with very indifferent build quality coming from Sachs their suspension supplier. I would insist that you have your strut changed as quite clearly you bump stop keeps coming loose. Mine shock was making a knock WITH THE BUMP STOP IN PLACE!

Well the bumps stops been reattached and so far so good. No knocking noise for the first time since new. Also creaking rear hopefully sorted. Springs upside down thought to be to blame. I will wait and see though. The story tomorrow could be very different.

I am now waiting for an appointment at the dealer with the factory engineers, apparently they are brining a new strut with them, I am told they have had a few complaints about this problem and want to come and see for themselves with the strut still on the car.

Guess there are some advantages to living near the factory.
I will try to find out more and let you know what is said.

The only thing that will pull these bump stops off as far as I can see is if the strut rebound limits are wrong and it extends too far, then the gaiter will strech and pull the stop off its mounts, but what do I know I am just an engineer.

The Civic went to the dealer today, the factory engineers have replaced both struts (better than I had hoped for), they also modified the new units by using some kind of adhesive to fix the bump stops to the top of the struts.

I guess that they are trying out some kind of fix as it would seem that there are are a few people having problems with this fault, perhaps it might be worth adding it to the thing to look for when buying/taking delivery.

A big WELL DONE to Fish Brothers Honda in Swindon, they phoned me Tuesday to ask if I could bring the car in today Tuesday, I said no as I had an important meeting, they managed to find a new Jazz loan car at one days notice got my car in all work done by 4:00pm. Excellent service and with a smile. Many thanks guys and gals if you ever read this.

Well its been 10 days, and guess what, the bump stop came loose again yesterday .

This is obviously an inherent problem that needs sorting out.

Back to the dealers later to see what they are going to do about it.

Update.

Dealer put my car up on their ramp yesterday, and put the bump stop back in. Drove down the road and I heard it come out again . So there is a problem here.

Called them back this morning, the service manager is going to talk to their technician to see what needs replacing and sort it out .

Just waiting for the call back now.

Keep y'all posted when I have more info about what they are going to do.
