Noise on speed humps

I collected my 2.2 Civic SE yesterday and on the way home on a regular route I heard a thump sound as I went over a speed hump. Oh no not the bump stop problem I thought. However I think it's pieces of flexible rubber flaps that hang down from the front bumper hitting the hump. What are they for? Anyway I'm pretty sure I'm right as there are light abrasions on them as if they've scraped on something.

I think they help with aerodynamics, as basically front tires are otherwise more exposed, so more wind 'hits' it (more drag without them).
At least, that's what I think

That's right, they are for aerodynamical purposes but their lowness is not a problem because they are flexible.

It is even worse with mudflaps......but I learnt after the first time to go over sped bumps at around 10MPH or under!

I scraped and bumped mine coming out of an unfamiliar retail park and the noise made me go cold I thought that I had caused some serious damage, but, when I checked it all was ok.

I cross six speed bumps to work and back every day and slow down to <20 much to the annoyance of anyone behind me, but with 17" wheels and firm suspension it's a must. I hate speed bumps give ma a Gatso anyday !

Where I live we have multiple speeds humps, the only time when the flaps do not hit the ground is when the speed is very, very low.

I think Honda should have fitted more stiffer shocks/springs, especially on the sport version.

Its an annoyance but the damage is minimal, I worry about the longevity of the flaps though after a few years of abuse.

Hey all,

I also thought those front flaps were to take impact of any scrapes. So when you go over a speed hump a bit too fast instead of scraping the bodykit of the car these flaps take the damage.

I used to have a lip under my old 206 that did the same job.

I think some people drive to fast over speed bumps

I always slow right down for them and have had no issues

Never scraped them on speed bumps , but once in a very uneven parking lot.

Mudflaps scrape regularly even at zero speed - I stopped altogether on one speed bump (in a car park) and with the car stationary the flap was touching the bump! This was with no passengers or luggage in the car. I wish I had never specified them now!

Mudflaps maybe - but no the low rubber protector thing at the front

I watched a someone in a golf today launch the car over a speed hump at around 20 - 30 miles and hour and the suspension let out a real groan
when he did it ( did I laugh - I think I did )
