street parking?

On my insurance I told them I park in driveway, but apparently some people tell me it is better if I told my insurance company that I parked in the street as this decreases the chance of house being burgled and burglars stealing car keys hence lower insurance. Is it true? I'm looking to change my details next year as I'm moving and I do have optional street parking. Can anyone confirm?

FrankstaH might be able to advise but the easiest thing to do would be get online and do a couple of quotes, one with driveway and another with street parking.
Sounds like nonsense to me but insurance is an odd business!

Just did two quotes, identical except one was "Street Parking" at night and the other was "Driveway" at night.

The "Street Parking" quote was £24.38 LESS!

Shows what I know about insurance...

Different insurers will apply their risk/premium calculations in different ways, and possibly even different premium calculations for different regions.

One insurer may have give a reduction for street parking, another for off street parking. Even different insurance brands within the same parent company might not apply their logic consistently.

My premiums with my previous insurer were the same for on street, off street and garage parking. That was for outer London, the same logic *might* not apply everywhere else.

You might expect garage parking to be the least risky of all options, but not all insurers agree. Possible scrapes getting in/out of the garage, the likelihood of objects from the garage falling on the car etc.

Hi Everone,

It's still a bit of a mixed message from the numerous respective Underwriters that we deal with.

Most of the high performance, specialist (kit, Classic, custom) and modified Insurers still prefer the vehicle to be garaged, or on a driveway and cringe at the thought of the vehicle being located on the road over night (particularly in high risk areas).

We have noticed a handful of everyday Insurers offering better terms for on street locations, which can only be due to the reduction in theft due to a thief potentially not knowing which home to steal the keys from.

This would however be offset by a heightened chance of vandalism or theft of parts.

Kind regards

Tony

Thanks for the reply guys. This has certainly offered me more insight. Wonder which areas are high risk, luckily I don't think I'm in one of them. Think I'm paying way too much! My bro drives exact same car with same NCB and same area but paying £200+ less than me only difference is he added his spouse!

I noticed this a year or two ago when getting insurance for the ST. The difference between being kept in the garage overnight and being parked on street overnight was about £80!!!

I now declare my car as being 'on street'. In my opinion that would be the worst case. I'd hate to think I had it declared as garaged and it got lifted from the drive/street the one night I couldn't garage it!

I think the insurance would still be valid if you had to park your car on the street cos' you had just taken the delivery of a new bathroom suit and it was being stored in your garage for a week or so.

What I can't see the insurance being happy about is that if you declare that you park on the street and then put in a claim cos' the garage ceiling fell on your car.

i thought usually on garage and drive way is cheaper. but yes if you state you park on garage over night , and you parked on driveway gets stolen over night , you are not covered.
