New 1.4l 100HP engine experiences

Hey guys,

what are you experiences with this new 1.4l/100HP engine? It only comes
with the 2009 facelifted Civic so I guess there are not so many people who
know it well.
I have only driven some 300 kilometers so far, trying not to rev over 3,500 at least until I get over 1000kilometers.
Its average fuel consumption is at 8.3litres /Shell V-Power/ now, but I expect it to drop after a few thousand kilometers. Am I right?

What are your thoughts about this engine? I know it has been reviewed but I am interested in your opinion after a few months of use.

Fuel consumption will improve with more kilometers on the engine, never driven the new 1.4 however.

Oh my god. You have a very, very, very heavy foot
With my old 1.4, so with 83HP, i have 6.7-7.2 (in the city) and 5.9-6.4(out of town, up to 110-120 km/h) fuel consumption.
PS: My car have still only 850km

Hi

Mine is only 200Km. The first day it was at 10l/100Km, because I used too much pressure on the pedal in low gears. Just to give you an idea, on the second day going to work, driving smoothly with most of the journey being on a motorway I set the Cruise Control in 80Km/h and the fuel consumption was under 5. It now has a 6.3 average. It would be even under 6, but yesterday I decided to see how fast it could go, so I ruined the average
So yes, the driving style is the main factor.

Answering your question about the engine, I still don't have much experience, but being very used to 1.4 engines, I can tell you this is a very well designed all round engine. It has quietness when you want to go smoothly, it roars when you want him too. It is very linear, and power is usually available if you need it. Obviously it doesn't have the "kick" of more powerful engines, nor does it regain power like a diesel. The 2nd gear is somewhat it's Achilles heel as it's not "quite there", but if you shift when you're supposed to you can have great fun with it. One of - if not the one -best 1.4 engines I've ever tried (and it's actually a 1.3 :P ).

After some 100 more kilometers the consumption has started to drop for me as well - it is on 7.9 avereage now I blame it on my driving style - just as you said - pressure on the pedal in low gears. I am used to driving cars with a bit more powerful engines and now I expect my poor little civic to have same acceleration. which is obviously stupid second thing is that I drive it almost exclusively in the city during the time of heavy traffic, which is more waltz dancing than driving /1-2-3, 1-2-3... /
on the other hand - I love how the engine power is "equally spread" all round the rev clock, and also the fact, that once my speed is over, lets say - 65km/h, I can keep it in 6th gear quite comfortably.
I still managed to keep the rev under 4000, so I am looking forward to see how the engine behaves at some 6000.

I can tell you right away how it behaves at 6000 (I shouldn't have taken it there but I had to, I just had to ). It makes an amazing sound (in my opinion, obviously) and you start getting 15l/100 :P

actually, I really tried it some 10 minutes ago. I have now like 950 kilometers driven so I decided to give it a proper go. of course, I did hit some higher revs occasionally a few times before but this was the first time I intentionally pushed it to the limits - MAN THAT WAS AWESOME!
it feels a lot sportier I thought it would!

Mine's going on 1200Km with 6.4. I don't have to drive much in the city.
I'll push him a bit more from now on. Not much because the price of petrol is going up again...

My girlfriend asked me the other day if I had to rev it so much. I replyed with a grin "I don't HAVE to..."

fortunately, I dont drive a girlfriend now, so I have more money left for petrol
anyway, I still hope that the fuel consumption will fall below 8.0 as this was one of the reasons I used for why I buy this car. my father asked me why I didnt want the same car as he has - a 1.6 suzuki sx4 which was way cheaper. and instead of telling him about style and all advantages honda has I just told him that his average of 8.7 is too high for me and I will drive at 7l/100km. well, I am trying to, I really do!

The salesman told me that after 10000Km it tends to drop. To me below 8 is acceptable and below 7 is good. I used to get between 8 and 11 on the Mégane.

hey,

the 1.4 starts to work good after 4500 RPM then hit it up til 6500RPM and you have yourself a very nice sound,

you can even feel a very little (i-)V-tec kick when you pass 4500RPM

but when you want all that you got 8,4 L /100km
i'm now currently roling at 9,5 L /100km

braking...I mean breaking news!

I have found out that I haven`t reset the average consumption counter basicaly since I drove the car for the first time right after the purchase.
I have reset it now /1000th km today!/ and it seems like the consumption has fallen a bit. of course, I will have to drive a few days now to get a real average. on the other hand, since I discovered the qualities of 4.500-6.500 revs, it may actually be higher than before

You said you use Shell V-power, right? Is that 95 or 98 octane? It's 98, isn't it?
Try 95 octane petrol and see if your consumption drops.

no, I think shell V-power is 95 plus some additives. 98 octane is shell V-power Racing, I guess. I havent tried that one because I dont know what would petrol with higher than recomended octane number do with the engine

I thought you might be using 98 and that sometimes translates into higher consumption, so that could be a reason for your higher average.
The salesman told me that this engine should use 95 octane fuel. It can use 98, but it is not recommended. So if you are using 95 octane (trusting the guys recommendation) it's fine.
