Unhappy New Civic - first 400 mile report

Hi,

Picked up my Civic 2.2 ES GT on Wed and ive now driven 400 miles on A roads with it and I thought I would give my initial impressions.

Great fun to drive!
Great fuel economy 49.5mpg average
Cruise is great, soft resume/soft disable

Ok now the not so good.

What on earth is the sloshing noise? is it the fuel in the tank? Surely this can't be by design????
Got a clunk from the front going over bumps.
There are buttons everywhere, i like to think Im not technology challenged but good grief did they get a discount for a bulk purchase, everything has a button
OMG, the dashboard squeeks!! It has driven me sooo mental today that I had to take the bit of the dash off that has the air con temp sensor in it (Im on my hols and can't get to a dealer). I just had a Qashqai that I sold as it squeeked all the time and I've got another squeeker!! Tell me there is a fix?????

Overall I'm still happy but the new car thing is wearing off fast as Im on holiday and just wanted me new Honda to "work"

Again on the plus side the steering wheel is awesome.

Jim.

Hi Jim, the cruise is good.

Never heard a sloshing noise but do have the stereo on alot.

Get the clunk checked.

I love the buttons but thats me!

Quite a few on here have had probs with sweeks, so far not a prob for me but that could be having the stereo on loud fixing it

The fuel tank is under the front seats so it's quite normal to hear a sloshing noise.

Fuel - Civinfo Wiki

Take it back to the dealer and have them take a look at the clunking noise.

I have the sloshing noise all the time... it comes when the fuel tank is not quite full. I similarly have a very squeaky dashboard.

I'm doing about 30,000 miles per year at the moment ... the above gets very tiring very quickly. Honestly, I miss the real build quality I had with VW.

I get the sloshing noise now and then as the fuel tank is under the front seats as DR mentions.

As has been said take the car back to the dealer and get the clunk sorted out with them.

The squeaks can be solved but it takes a little time to do so. Some dealers are happy to help solve the problem, some aren't. You could always ask them if they can help you detect and resolve the 'squeak' problem.

Glad you are enjoying it.

If you can here the sloshing you don't have the stereo turned up enough.

The only time I notice the fuel sloshing is when I'm crawling hence low engine noise otherwise I don't hear it.

What is it wish these rattles!

Mine has never rattled since I got it in early 2007. Did they rush build them before the factory shut?

I've now done 800 miles in my 2.2 ES 5 door (08MY) and had the following issues:
  • two dents in door not picked up by pdi
  • windscreen cowl rattle
  • windscreen wiper creaks
  • broken plastic under bonnet caused by heavy handed fixing of above
  • dashboard scratched to buggery from day1 - shiny black gone
  • dashboard rattles - fixed so far with silicone lubricant
  • annoying rattles in the headlining - 3 unsuccessful attempts to fix
  • clicking clutch - switches replaced twice and dealer now saying they all do it; a characteristic!
  • paint defective on rear door: orange peel effect
  • petrol sloshing and suspension knocking - stuck with this
Wish I'd kept the CRV!

Thanks for all the replies! Been touring on holiday in the car hence the sporadic replies. I'm afraid that if the car continues to be a problem in this way I will simply reject it and ask for a refund, I'm not spending all this money to be told it just does this. Neither am I happy that it squeeks so badly from new, this simply isn't good enough. To try and show how annoying the rattle is with the car I have video'ed it and put onto YouTube and sent the dealer a link.

If you want to experience how annoyed I am feel free to check out my video

As you probably can guess I'm not a happy soul at the moment

Wow that must drive you nucking futs!

It sounds a bit like some extra plastic blowing around in the vents, but on steroids. Oh well, at least the dealer will be able to hear this one

I had really bad slushing sounds today, turns out it was a door full of water!

http://www.civinfo.com/forum/wiki-ar...ter-doors.html

Though some sound from a near full tank of petrol is normal. Just dont fill itto the brim is the solution for me.

The sound you got, sounds abit like what i had, it was the exhaust shield rubbing/tapping on the body work.

http://www.civinfo.com/forum/bugs-fa...pare-time.html

Though yours sounds a lot louder than mine.

This is simply NOT GOOD ENOUGH!
I would give them the opportunity to fix it.
If they still cant..reject the car on the grounds of 'not fit for purpose'.

Surely a squeek isnt that hard to fix???
You wouldnt reject a fine car just because of those problems?
Front clunk can be fixed, squeek aswell, the slushing is just a characteristic of the car. Tends to be more pronounced when its between full and 3/4.
But i do know how you feel, after owning my car for 4 months, i was starting to notice some detoriation on the suspension and rattles were starting to pop up from everywhere. When you pay so much for your own car ( the civic is my first car), you kind of expect it be flawless in every way. Unfortunately, its ONLY a civic and the build quality isnt what i should be/was. But now after 19 months, most of the rattles are gone and a few visits to my dealer has sorted all the problems.
In the beginning i even doubted if the long term reliability of the car was good, but i know drive my car like i stole on a daily basis and imho, i think the civic was designed to be driven hard, especially the petrol variant.
Do hope you get it all sorted but just give the car some time to proof itself.

Definitely sounds like something blowing around behind the dash rather than a rattle (if that make sense). The dearler should be able to fix that I reckon.

I also heard the clutch click when you depressed it! Mines doing that since I had clutch replaced, though I can live with it UNTIL my next service, it better get fixed then or I'll be annoyed, very annoyed.

I had a noise in a 307 I had, after picking it from a service, took me hours to figure it out. Eventually I found a ratchet wedged under the car that wasy partly laying on the rotating drive shaft...hence noise!

Hope you get it sorted, its still a great car!

That's not the usual squeek/rattle, which tends to be related to road conditions/bumps/stresses on car etc. At least it's there, loud and clear, for all to hear so should be no problem fixing that (here's hoping).

Hi mate, which dealer did you get the car from?

That squeak is really annoying, they'll be able to sort it out for you. It's not as if they won't be able to hear it.

I've had my 2.2 SE+ for almost 4 months and I love it.

The sloshing of fuel is a bit annoying to start with but I don't really notice it anymore. It only does it from just under a full tank to about 2/3 full. It's as if the baffles in the tank aren't tall enough to stop full sloshing over them.

Not a normal squeak there, and one that any dealer will fix. Not so easy whilst on holiday of course.
Have you tried holding some trim to see what part is squeaking?
If you find it try to pack it with paper/ card to reduce the noise til the dealer gets it fixed. That would at least stop it from driving you round the bend.

Update

It fixed itself yesterday , although thanks to sending the dealer an e-mail with the link to Youtube they took the car in this morning. So far I have a sticky passenger mirror (they all do this, I checked on a new Jazz and it was the same - goes slow then fast then slow when moving up/down). They fixed a bit of loose trim behind the dash, presumably this was the original cause of the squeek. I noticed a mark on the alloy wheel under the lacquer and they are going to try and get this replaced for me. I also noticed marks in the boot lit under the glass in the paint, two vertical lines and on either side of the same panel on the rear corners of the car two slanted lines, like little run lines in the paint, again this is standard on the car, take a look at your own, they appear in them all even a brand new type-R I looked at today, annoying but if they all have it can't really complain!

Overall I'm happy again esp as the dealer was so nice to get me booked in at short notice.

Regards,

Jim.
