The F1 Thread

Well to be honest the car sounds great

But Fernando Alonso has still managed only six laps today to follow on from the five they managed over two days in Abu Dhabi last November - has to be something of a concern. I hope not and the indications seem to be electrical gremlins / teething problems and as McLaren makes the ECU etc you would seem to suspect hey know what they are doing so is this a Honda issue? but then again Honda would have been working on this for around 3 years and surely they have run the power unit on a rig for thousands of hours so why the problems?

What is also worrying for Honda as well is Mercedes hit the ground running again completing 157 laps.

The issue is packing I bet . It's a very small car they have for aero reasons and Denis is quoted as saying they are fixing shorts tonight.

Another I can see cropping up is Honda wanted to design a brand new ERS system And not use Mclarens own.

Plus they are still using development engines.........

Id of thought we would at least have a runner by now

yes here goes

Dennis has been waxing rhapsodic about the quality of design and workmanship on the new MP4-30. 'The rear bodywork of our car has been brilliantly shrink-wrapped around a fantastically advanced and incredibly compact Honda power unit,' he said. 'We've even invented a new phrase to describe its design philosophy - the size-zero F1 car.' "Dennis indicated that he was not too worried about the car's lack of running, caused by what the team say are 'a few niggly problems'.

I guess as long as they get going pretty well by the end of the week they will sort it quick enough, lets remember I think was 2012 when McLaren tried a complex exhaust blowing system that did not work so redesigned the whole of the rear of the car 3 weeks before Melbourne and hit the ground running will probably the fastest car that year just unreliable, they should have evolved that rather than the 2013 design that ultimately was slower and a dog

News update so lets see what happens later today

Honda are confident of putting in more laps on Day Two at Jerez, revealing the electrical issue they had on Sunday has already been resolved. Fernando Alonso debuted the new McLaren-Honda MP4-30 at Jerez on Sunday but managed just six laps on the day.
The Spaniard covered single lap installation runs in the morning before a technical issue put paid to his day's work.
But despite their aborted start, Honda are confident of better come Monday.

Motorsport chief Yasuhisa Arai told Autosport: "I cannot say the detail but there was small electrical trouble and also some control trouble, but not so big. "We have already fixed it. We have found out what has happened, and tonight [Sunday] we change something and tomorrow will be much better."
Sunday's troubles come in the wake of Honda's post-season woes in Abu Dhabi last year.

In action for the first time, the revised McLaren used during the Yas Marina test ran into several problems. Honda, however, say Sunday's issues were a different to those experienced last year.
"In Abu Dhabi we had many communication troubles, but that was already fixed before this test," Arai said. "We have found out new issues today because the car is completely new. "We have to learn very carefully step-by-step, so we can imagine what happened today."

oh dear another bad day

"The long delays at McLaren are rooted in the car's packaging - on a design described as 'quite extreme, quite aggressive, quite innovative' by Fernando Alonso on Sunday. The team thought they had fixed overnight the problems that hit Alonso on Sunday but the same problem recurred for Jenson Button on Monday morning. The part in question - the identity of which McLaren will not reveal - is buried so deep in the car that it is taking a lot of time to get at it and fix it. But a spokesman said the team were 'quite positive we've sorted the problem'.
"Meanwhile, 'aggressive' would also be an apt word for Honda's approach as it prepares for its return to F1. The Japanese company will have different engines at the next test than the one that is in the car now, and then different engines again at the last test - the race engines. These last ones will incorporate every single modification made on the previous two versions. Honda needs to homologate its initial design with the FIA by 28 February, but will have some development still available during the season."

While the 2015 Merc is virtually a new car and their 157laps is a new record, I'm guessing your forgetting the full year running/racing with the best car/engine they had plus the many many years invested before the 2014 season.

Plus the fact Honda have build a new R&D centre, opened a base in the UK, brought people from other areas/relocation from Japan, new telemetry, track facilities and the obvious language barriers I don't think it's anything to worry about...yet.

A few of the proper f1 journo's have also commented that the car looks pretty decent compared to Rosberg's car so far and if they get on top of the teething issues they could be challenging for podiums by 2nd half of the year. Mobil have also worked with Honda to allow the engine to run hotter, thus less cooling and better aero.

McLaren Honda's situation's a bit like Red Bull's last year - still, they didn't end up too badly!!
Fezza's are looking quite tasty.
My man Lewis is starting to push.

Always had a soft spot for the Macca's, and JB.
I think the former's ever since seeing a few M6 / M7 / **'s side by side at Goodwood years ago - amazing cars!!

I don't expect the Macca to start performing - be consistently in the points - until at least the 3rd or 4th race.

Here's how they stand:
1) Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) 1:21.516
2) Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) 1:22.497 +0.981
3) Max Verstappen (Toro Rosso) 1:22.553 +1.037
4) Felipe Massa (Williams) 1:23.116 +1,600
5) Marcus Ericsson (Sauber) 1:23.551 +2.035
6) Romain Grosjean (Lotus) 1:24.300 +2.286
7) Daniil Kvyat (Red Bull) 1:24.300 +2.784
8) Jenson Button (McLaren) 1:27.660 +6.144

It's been a tricky few days for McLaren, who are embarking on a new era with engine partner Honda.
"We have had a number of problems," said McLaren's director of engineering Matt Morris who met with the media earlier today. "We have had some operational issues - all of us working together as a team for the first time - things you take for granted when you have been with an engine supplier for many years.
"You drop the ball sometimes, like saying getting oil levels wrong and all these sorts of things. We have had a few issues like that. We have also had some minor electrical issues, which resulted in a lot of downtime but have actually been relatively easy to fix.
"The main thing is that we have not been burning bodywork or blowing up engines. I am pretty happy that we are going to come out of this test with no sorts of major issues to resolve."

To be honest reading the bottom sounds promising and just a shame they lost 2 days of this test with the electrical gremlins, a but of luck at the next test they can now start to dial the car into the track and turn up the engine etc

McLaren managed just 79 laps over four days - compared to more than 500 by Mercedes. But director of engineering Matt Morris insisted the team had had a positive test as they bedded in their relationship with Honda.
"We have had a number of problems," Morris said. "We have had some operational issues - all of us working together as a team for the first time - things you take for granted when you have been with an engine supplier for many years.
"You drop the ball sometimes, like saying getting oil levels wrong and all these sorts of things. We have had a few issues like that.

Well Honda did run a lot quicker today but still had reliability problems

McLaren-Honda, who had a troubled first test in Jerez, again hit problems, despite a promising start. Jenson Button completed 21 laps - nearly a third of the entire running the team managed at the first pre-season test earlier this month - and ended the morning sixth fastest, just 0.875 secs off the pace. Button had been second fastest to Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen after two and a half hours. However, his running was then brought to an end after Honda discovered a faulty seal on the motor-generator unit recovering energy from the rear axle. Honda said it would need to redesign the component to prevent the problem recurring and that the new part would not be ready until Saturday. So although Fernando Alonso will have an engine for Friday, the same problem as affected Button may well recur then.

Not good to read as unless sand bagging they will not hit the ground running

Declaring McLaren to be "50 percent behind" schedule, Eric Boullier admits development is taking preference over performance at this stage.

Friday's running at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya proved to be McLaren-Honda's most successful day to date with the new package. Fernando Alonso managed 59 laps with a best time of 1:25.961, which put him 1.387s off the pace set by Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo. Reliability, though, continues to hamper the team as Alonso's 59 laps meant he completed the fewest of the ten drivers out on track.

"We did maybe 50 percent of what we wanted to do," Boullier told motorsport.com. "We have 12 days to get ready, so if we miss half then we won't be ready 100 per cent. So our development in terms of plan we are 50 percent behind." The Racing Director added that McLaren have yet to switch their focus to performance with the new car but rather are still focusing on ensuring it all works as expected. "We are not obviously looking for performance," he added. "The expectation of what we wanted to build, it looks like we achieved it so far. Next week there should be some more parts. "We have a lot of systems to check, that includes a lot parameters to understand the car. We have to do a lot of mileage, to gather data, before we concentrate on performance. The priority is the development programme. "The car is still in launch configuration. We couldn't put enough miles now to bring some more parts. "Next week we'll see another step, and then in Australia we'll see another big step.

It is progress.
I really don't expect to see serious progress until they 'come to Europe' ...
Each round there will be progress - quantum leaps initially in comparison to how they start.
Honda won't let a serious liaison like this go.
It's superb experience for future developments for Honda road cars - this is where much highly advanced development is happening - hence their return to F1.

Oh dear and yet again Mclaren Honda dont get many laps in but at least it does not appear to be a mechanical problem this time

Fernando Alonso is undergoing what his McLaren team say are "precautionary checks" in hospital after a heavy crash in testing.
The two-time champion hit the wall on the exit of the 150mph Turn Three at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, one of Formula 1's most demanding corners. McLaren, who have given no information on what caused the accident, said he was "conscious and spoke with doctors". Alonso's adviser Luis Garcia Abad added on Twitter that the driver was "OK". The incident happened at 12:35 local time on Sunday, shortly before the lunch break on the final day of the second of three pre-season tests. It is unclear whether Alonso made a mistake or something broke on the car. McLaren said the car "left the track at Turn Three, causing the right-hand side of his car to strike the wall" on the inside of the circuit.
