3D-Effect SAT NAV - Hate it!!

Anyone the same?
I loved the simple, clear, plan-view sat nav in my old DERV EX 8G.
This stupid 3D-effect 'intuitive' Sat Nav mirroring the stupid efforts you can download on tablet-sized 'phones is seriously pigging me off!!
It's definitely not as 'at-a-glance' as the plan-view one in my old 8G was.

I'm hoping it'll just be a case of getting used to it, but after using it several times, I definitely find it too confusing, trying to feed too much information in a very confusing format.

Perhaps there's an option within the menus to transform to plan view - need to check.

I think Garmin do have a 2D option, and, I think the unit is based on stock Garmin.

It is supposed to be based on Garmin, but nowhere near as clear as the 8G's was.

should be a 2d option in the menu. not sure exactly where. i do prefer the 3d view of it on the 9gen although never had a satnav on a big screen before (previous car/satnav was via 5" phone display)

I set mine to 2D, it's exactly the same as in recent Garmin nuvis, for example:

See page 10 Changing the Map Perspective.

I like the 3D effect because (in my opinion) I can see farther ahead what's coming.

I don't like Garmin navigations though. Probably going to stick to Google maps and Android Auto - if that works.
Otherwise I'll have a deeper look into the rooting and customizing of the Honda Connect which is reported at XDA and US forums and use a different system. But Google Maps is dependent on Google Services and those are a pain to get running as I read.

Garmin have some odd routing choices. They will often send you down a country track only to bring you back onto the main road some distance later.
This is well discussed, and complained about elsewhere.

Garmin also tend to use road names instead of road numbers in navigation speech which is stupid as only local people know the road name in advance.

They've been told but ignore the requests.

not had the road name issue with garmin, but i'm more focused on hearing a distance & direction rather than on what road. i cant even think what the hodna garmin tells you tbh.
not sure if it was having a good day, but with the recent update from garmin within the last month or two, the routing seems better. didnt take me on any funny routes and sent me the way i'd of gone out of choice.

ateotd, i treat it as guidance only. if i dont know the route, it'll get me there. But the routes i know a bit better, i'll stick to those roads/routes and let it recalculate.

My biggest issue with the garmin unit is traffic. TMC is too limited and honda/garmin agreement really should of allowed the unit to pair with the garmin android app to get live internet-based traffic.

dcivic THANKS!!

IT WORKS - 2-D.

Much easier at-a-glance perspective than 3-D - IMHO.

Trafficmaster TMC traffic is indeed absolutely pathetic when you compare it to the excellent Garmin, Inrix sourced digital traffic.

TMC is motorways and major A roads only whereas digital covers all roads, including minor B roads when problems exist.

TMC often takes 15 to 30 mins to reach your unit whilst digital traffic is rarely out of date.

The road name annoyance comes when the Garmin mapping, provided by 'Here' knows the road name. An example would be something like "at the roundabout take the third exit to church street" instead of "at the roundabout take the third exit to A1000".

Using road numbers you can often tie the road number with any advance road signs that always display the road number.

The traffic reporting is one of the major strengths of Google Maps in my experience. It once took me around a traffic jam, and I could see, others were following the same route as me. But their navigation system told them to get back on the Autobahn one point earlier than my Google maps (I wondered a bit what it's trying to do), and then I could see that at that point the jam was still going strong. Google maps took me to the next possible entry (is that the right word?) and the jam was gone. Saved me at least 20 minutes compared to the other poor guys.

The best instructions however came from a Becker navigation system (for me so far). It had very clear expressions and good timing. Sometimes it sounded a bit annoyed - like it didn't trust me to follow the instructions. That was kind of funny.

While on the subject of different selectable views for things.....
I was not impressed with the view from the reversing camera....it seemed to curve up at the edges and just did not look like a natural view that I had previously been used to.
Then I noticed there was a button on the screen to change the view to a flat natural one.
Much happier now.

I noticed the 'curly view' also had a different coloured surround - yellow instead of white, or orange instead of yellow, can't remember - find it really confusing. Lighter colour when it's straight on.

I've found this confusing as well - nice to know there are options.

Normally happening when I'm manoeuvring, obviously, so haven't got around to playing with it.

Mine just has me wondering all across fields all the time. I find it useless as it doesn't know where I am half the time.

Check your firmware version as I'm sure there was a fix to that.

Dig out the posts from steve_m regarding the Honda Connect firmware updates.

Back to O/P, I dug a little deeper into the settings and reset my icon - the default is too confusing ... you're an arrow, directions are arrows, etc.

I've changed 'my icon' to the white car with blue stripes.
3-D is sort-of working for me now ... I think!!

I changed mine to the white car too soon after I got it. I also changed the map theme from default to Honda which shows the route clearer.

I'll have a look at that.
Definitely getting more-used to it now.
