Question What can I expect from my Honda niggle rectification visit?

My Prestige is going in for a 'sit and wait' appointment later this week (which has a 90 minute allocation) for me to have my faults looked at by a technician.

It's nearly 9 months old and has done 6k. I am notifying them of the following (in order of how much they drive me crazy):

Roof Rattle
Aircon whistle
A-pillar wind noise
Roof liner above drivers head intermittent vibration (different to the rattle)
A Pillar/dashboard intermittent vibration
Sat Nav position intermittent 'wandering'

With the seemingly 'well known' roof rattle and aircon whistle, are they likely to know what the cause is and just do it, or could I expect them to be 'trying something' then having to take it back again, and possibly multiple times to get the issue/s resolved?

I understand the intermittent issues are more difficult to diagnose but alas.

Should I list them clearly on a sheet of paper, or just verbally go through the issues with them? I can confidently show them the roof rattle, and I can hear the aircon whistle nearly all of the time (hopefully they will too as it is quite high pitched). All the other issues are more difficult to show as could be subjective or random to occur.

Also are Honda dealerships relatively open to helping customers with these kind of issues or not? I would imagine Honda themselves will have to compensate the franchise for their time spent on investigating and fixing such faults, likely not giving them so much profit as a non-warranty issue and fully paying customer.

My only experience was a few years ago when I suggested before my 8G went in for it's annual service that the roof blind sticks quite often in the cooler months of the year. Despite having an extended Honda guarantee (not extension to the manufacturers warranty) I was informed it would be around £600 and wouldn't be covered by the warranty.

Would just be nice to get a flavour of anyones experiences. I'm not on a mission to name and/or shame particular dealers at all.

I have a good dealership and I would advise listing things as there is no ambiguity and both parties know what the faults are. I have a fault with mine at the moment and its still with Honda for resolution, my dealer has been good to me in the past and I have no reason to believe they wont be the same in the future.

One thing I would say your 90 minutes alocation is very optomistic, you have quite a list of faults for investigation.

15 Minutes per issue, Hope he's powering through

I believe there is now a published solution for the aircon whistle; It sounds as though the roof / a-pillar may be linked - Could be a simple re-fit matter if you're lucky.

I don't think there is a published fix for the GPS issue yet, though

Aircon whistle. There is a fix and it fixed my car. Quote Bulletin number ST-09-001-00 to your dealer. It's an 'on complaint' one I believe, but it works. They change one of the A/C pipes for one a bit shorter as the original acts a bit like an organ pipe.
As yet there is no fix for the satnav.

Write them down and give a copy to the service manager. He cannot then say he forgot any of them.

A Pillar wind noise is reputed to be fixed by a door re-alignment (covered elsewhere in a recent topic)

Okay so I'm back from my local Honda (relatively local anyway) and after them having it for nearly two hours they confirmed that they 'agreed' with the faults I had listed. They are ordering the part required for the air conditioning whistle rectification which will take a few weeks to come in. Once that's come in they will attempt rectify all the faults highlighted.

In respect of the Sat Nav location 'wander' - they did say they would try updating it, even though I confirmed I had already done so. I suspect this will need to go in again in the future to rectify - to be honest I am most irritated by the 'noises' so if they get those nailed, my driving pleasure will be maximised!

I will be leaving it with them for 2 days and will be provided with a courtesy car in the meantime.

There's a sense of relief with them 'agreeing' that the faults exist I have to say, I know some of our US cousins have been fobbed off with such faults with their respective Honda dealers. Alas I will report on the results once they've had it in for repairs.

The headlining rattle is one of the most common claims, caused by wiring that had too much slack upon installation rubbing against various other components attached to the headliner.

Don't worry though, I've been assigned it to solve at work! Not that that helps yourself Can't speak for the other faults though.

Do you mean updating the maps or updating the firmware? Updating the maps will not fix it, but updating the firmware might. But I wouldn't hold my breath on that one as the wisdom of the web (elsewhere on this forum) suggests it's a hardware fault, probably something causing interference with the sat signal.

I mean updating the firmware.

There was a firmware update available when I first checked for updates when I bought the car in January.

I have checked since and no further updates have been found.

How do you check for firmware updates? Surely that is a dealer job.

I'd be interested in that ..

I recently went away for work, and returned after 2 weeks. I had a specialist's appointment for my shoulder, so summoned the mighty satnav - never seen it wander that much before - took it 25 minutes to eventually run parallel to the roads I was on, indicating me traversing Mr Giles' gardens but the map was close enough!!

Got there, but not before rebooting a couple of times - switching car off and starting fresh searches - managed to arrive 5' early, instead of what would have been 15' early!

IMHO the whole head unit is a piece of crap, you would have thought Honda with all its resources could have come with something better, a five year old could have done a better job than this POS

If you go in to App Centre from the home screen, it will check for updates providing it's connected to WiFi.

If an update is available it will show and give you the option to download. I 'presumed' that a 'Honda System Update' (I think it was called that) appeared as an option and I installed it - didn't take that long - 10 minutes. Would this not have been a firmware update?

Any other updates that have shown have been a specific app, like Aha for example. This is the only one I've seen that was just 'Honda System'.

It would have been an update for something. Who knows if that included to Satnav.
I'll go and have a look mine when the weather here abates a bit and see if I get offered any updates. I know for sure that mine hasn't. I will report back.

That will relate to just App Centre, it is a white list update to allow newly added apps to be installed.

That's what I thought Steve, but wasn't 100% convinced that my thoughts were correct or not. Thanks for the clarification.

Update!

I have now collected my car following attempted 'rectification' of my list of issues.

They fitted the improved aircon pipe, adjusted the drivers door, lubricated the sunroof seal, adjusted the a-pillar trim, and were unable to update the firmware due to it failing multiple times.

So, the results are in... What did they fix?

Roof Rattle - Partially resolved - the metal type rattle sound is no more - though I understand at least one of our forum had short term success with this fix. The roof liner creaking remains and was similar in the courtesy 1.0 EX Civic I had too. I did stipulate there are two types of roof noise - i.e. rattle and liner creaking. I suspect this is the adhesive or whatever hardener is used for the headliner trim, it drying out and creaking with the slightest movement. If you flex the edges of the trim with your hand you can hear the same kind of noise. I predict a replacement liner will be fitted under warranty, which would fix it, at least in the short term. Long term they need to use a different adhesive/hardener or something beyond my understanding!

Aircon whistle - Resolved - the part as documented on these forums now whistle free and pleasant air con performance, just in time for some warmer weather!

A-pillar wind noise - Resolved - the adjustment clearly sufficient.

Roof liner above drivers head intermittent vibration (different to the rattle). Haven't heard it yet, so hopefully resolved.

A-Pillar/dashboard intermittent vibration - Happened a few miles in to my journey home after collecting. Not the most annoying, but whatever they did with the A-Pillar trim hasn't worked.

Sat Nav position intermittent 'wandering' - Remains - they did say they'd try the firmware update again when I take it in for a service in a couple of months time.

What will I do now? I feel much happier now the aircon whistle has gone - that really did drive me insane when crawling through traffic. The main roof rattle also is also far more blissful whilst it remains silent. I guess time will tell. I'm going to mention the issues that remain when it goes in for a service. I really shouldn't have to keep taking it back to resolve, but alas I have a certain expectation from my purchase as do all of us I'm sure.

I still am very disappointed I even had to take it in for what are essentially quality issues - it's not like they thought I was unreasonable in any way, they agreed and tried their best to resolve everything, which is great form a customer service perspective.

I was in a Toyota Prius Plus taxi in Spain recently, it was all leather and looked very nice (shame the outside is so ugly), it had a glass roof too. Not a single rattle or undesirable noise - it was as smooth as anything, and it really did make me think Honda have gone down in my estimations.

There we have it.

I hope our continued efforts to at least report issues allow Honda to iron out these niggles promptly and efficiently.

All you can do with the issues that are not resolved is keep taking it back, it will be logged on their internal system what was done, so they can try something else..

Side note: air con whistle just ain't just Honda's.. The Mrs's new C class Merc has an A/C whistle worse than the CRV and 10G! Something else I have to do now!

Do you know what caused this and what they did to fix it? I get it under strong acceleration when I shift up a gear (bizarre)

Higgo8 - I'm sorry to say but the fact a 'Mercedes' has such an issue, despite their enormous price tags, I don't feel quite so bad. So thank you for that, but I do sympathise and feel it's outrageous your Mrs' motor has a similar problem! Good luck with it!

KhabibSmesh - I'm not sure what fixed the 'buzzing'. It seems to have resolved the occasional buzzing in the roof liner directly above my head, and moved the noise to the B pillar! It's probably a cable that runs through the roof section vibrating on something else.

I have to say after 100 miles of driving my car is definitely very, very enjoyable to drive again and far less annoying than previously. The sun is shining and it looks great sparkling away with its metallic paint too!

I will pursue the remaining niggles and again report back with how things go. Perhaps Toyota aren't getting my money yet afterall...
