Hi All,

PLEASE READ THSI CAREFULLY AND ONLY POST ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW:

I have put up with some automobile problems in my time, but this paint issue is really getting on my nerves.

MY NHB CTR is looking very spotty and white only on the bonnett and wings. From previous posts I can see other people have the same issue. I believe that we have contacted watchdog, but no airtime has been established as of yet.

I live in Wales and we have a similar welsh program called "the Ferrett" which deals with welsh customer compliants. The people behind the program do seem to gain results when customers pose their problems.

I will be contacting them about the paint issue, and would like to have a back log of evidence before I present the issue.

SO PLEASE: If you have a problem with the paint chiping and HAVNT had a resolve from HONDA or your DEALER, please post a brief description, and Post a Photo of the affected area.

This will ensure I have an unedited issue log. This is not just for those Owners who are in Wales, but as it is a Welsh based program the more Welsh that add to this post the more likely we are to appear on the program, and gain their support to achieve a resolve.

Thanks all.

PLEASE COULD YOU ONLY POST YOUR PAINT PROBLEM WITH PICTURE ONLY!!!!!!

I have an 09MY and after 3weeks I already have a nasty chip on bonnet and chip near gas tank !!!

Our 1995 Peugeot has no two stone chips and considering it is a 14 year old model its quit a shame for honda uk !!!

My front end has too many microscopic chips to count. I even have them on the doors either side. Been through the whole dealer / Honda UK farce and was told its normal. This despite a report from a body shop saying the paint had adhesion problems with the base coat ( HUK would not recognise this and apparently did not have a rep in scotland ).

My only concern with going to the TV and press with this is the fact my car has lost enough already and any bad publicity would hurt the value further. Mind you any salesman viewing for a trade in would note all the chips anyway.

Having had a quick look through the thread I think that the info I've been told twice by people in the motor trade seems correct in that lighter coloured paint hardens better and quicker than darker. Most of the problems seem on darker colours. They are far worse on some than I would have expected. So far my Chapagne Silver has very few and only tiny chips, but I've only done 2900 miles.
I did buy a touch up stick in December but note it can only be used above 15 Deg. C.

You should of brought a silver car, it does nt show the stone chips, and I do alot of motorway driving. Saying that I did receive a big chip on my bumper yesterday, which just missed my spot lamp by 3 inches! (I've not done 17.5k miles.)

Ive had mine a month now and already collected three stone chips :(

I wouldn't mind so much if the undercoat was white but its grey !

I dont think its paint they've used on mine...more like condensed milk !

I got my 08MY in July 08 and picked up 2 or 3 sizeable chips in the first 1000 miles (2 months or so). Got one or two tiny ones after that but for the past 2 or 3 months I don't seem to have collected any more at all -- despite being sandblasted by a gritting lorry during the snow in Feb. I'm wondering if perhaps it is a case that the paint Honda use does take a long time to harden up fully? Mine was pre-registered in April 08, so maybe it had had a chance to harden up a bit before it hit the road!

Mine is nearly 2 years old and still chips as easily as it did in the first few months :(
Milano Red appears to be more susceptible than other paint colours

The Continuing Saga of Civics -v- Stonechips

I am distraught, having washed my 18 month old Civic, only to discover not one or two more stone chips but a snowstorm of chips pitting the bonnet and front wings to such an extent that I am beginning to wonder whether my car is actually nighthawk black or could it be changing colour to white. Have trawled the forum and note that I am not alone, so not one to sit on my laurels have contacted Watchdog tonight to see if I can get them to take on the mighty Honda UK. Will keep you posted.

After a winter up and down the M6 mines starting to show the chips :( Which is not surprising considering the amount of times i've been gritted. Twice on Sunday with the temp gauge reading 6 degrees

What amazes me is the fact that no matter what colour car you have the basecoat is always a contrasting colour!!!! Maybe its for technical reasons but surely it would make more sense for the basecoat to be a match for the topcoat????!!!!

Ho-hum. Lets hope the 'they all do that' argument stands up at trade in time!!! Something tells me it wont!!

Can a mod please update my original post on page 1, as the link to my photos no longer work? Copy and paste the following:

Two years and 36000 miles and my bonnet looks like a clear sky at night. Just wiped the bonnet and wing with a microfibre cloth and water to remove the rain marks:

Honda say this is normal ware and tare.

Make up your own minds.

its a shame when we pay all this money and after a while it looks like s***. Could we not speak to watchdog about swirlmarks aswell as the chips?

#57 ·
All paints will swirl depending on how they are treated - there are ways and means of preventing it or reducing it but most owners couldn't be arsed to do it that way and spend the time doing it correctly.
Honda know this, so it's not something that'll fly, if raised with them.
Even BMW's chip, with their harder paint too - depends on the type of roads you travel mostly on, how often stones get kicked up from the vehicle in front or passing, hitting the rear (less common).

Whilst cleaning my car this weekend (in between the rain showers), as i do every weekend, i absolutely flipped out this time when i found yet more chips that have appeared since the previous week - a cluster of 3 on the bonnet and one on the driver's door (this is the second one on the door now); and these were just the final straw - as an estimate this takes my tally of chips into the 20s i think; i've been filling them in with my Dr. ColorChip kit as i find them, and it makes them better but they're never fully gone, so i decided it was time to visit the dealer.

I've done this today, and the guy was very helpful; apparently understanding my frustration - he has taken some depth measurements to send to Honda - i'm not overly hopeful that this is going to be in my favour as i know so many of you guys have tried the same to no avail but also because he seemed to think that my experience was "standard" which to me is like an admission of below acceptable quality if a 9 month old (7,000 miles) is experiencing this. I was given the "heard it all before" talk about modern paints being less durable due to health and safety etc....blah, blah!!

I asked out of interest about the cost of a respray, and was estimated £600 for the bonnet and wing blending - does this seem a normal cost? - it seemed high to me.

Anyway, he estimates a week to get a response....so i will report back....if it doesn't go in my favour (as i expect it won't), i imagine it's on to Honda myself direct. I may contact Watchdog too, as i figure if enough of us have then they may take it up; although it's a long shot still.

Ps. On a complete aside, i saw a CW CTR in the showroom; first one i've seen in the flesh; looked really nice, although absolutely covered in very bad swirls!

Thanks for the link Pottsy, that's exactly it!

As promised, i said i'd report back - i just posted in this thread too:

http://www.civinfo.com/forum/bugs-faults-irritations/5299-suspect-paint-report-2.html#post422895

Basically, the dealer thinks this is normal and compares with other cars around but according to the above thread, one of the measurements would be below the specification set by Honda of 70microns, where as the other two measurements are right on the minimum.

I'm just considering how to take this forward but at these measurements are on the bonnet, i consider it quite crucial that they're right on the bear minimum, assuming that these are still the specs as before.

Can anyone help me find the posts by Topcat regarding the paint thickness reports please, showing how thick (or thin) the paint on that car was? There's so many large paint threads and i can't seem to find it.

I've got my results from Honda and want to compare before posting them up.

Thank you.

Its not just the Civic that is affected by the lousy paint. I have had my Accord for over a month now and i am finding a new chip every time i finish my 65 mile journey to work. The paint is just as soft.

The bonnet is not chipping as much as my Civic did due to the shape, but the doors and wings are affected. I know it's not the be all and end all but I find it very disappointing as i take pride in my cars appearance and the piss poor paint was one of the main reasons i got rid of the Civ.

No more Honda's for me.
