PLEASE READ THSI CAREFULLY AND ONLY POST ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW:
I have put up with some automobile problems in my time, but this paint issue is really getting on my nerves.
MY NHB CTR is looking very spotty and white only on the bonnett and wings. From previous posts I can see other people have the same issue. I believe that we have contacted watchdog, but no airtime has been established as of yet.
I live in Wales and we have a similar welsh program called "the Ferrett" which deals with welsh customer compliants. The people behind the program do seem to gain results when customers pose their problems.
I will be contacting them about the paint issue, and would like to have a back log of evidence before I present the issue.
SO PLEASE: If you have a problem with the paint chiping and HAVNT had a resolve from HONDA or your DEALER, please post a brief description, and Post a Photo of the affected area.
This will ensure I have an unedited issue log. This is not just for those Owners who are in Wales, but as it is a Welsh based program the more Welsh that add to this post the more likely we are to appear on the program, and gain their support to achieve a resolve.
Thanks all.
PLEASE COULD YOU ONLY POST YOUR PAINT PROBLEM WITH PICTURE ONLY!!!!!!
Cheers !! Going into dealer tomoro for my 4 shiny new blades courtesy of huk as the paint was bubbling on all 4 wheels on my 2 year old car! Still considering something diff at Xmas, 120d maybe?

I knew about this paint issue when i was looking out for my next car but i decided that the chipping was just a minor problem on what is an all round awesome car.
when i picked up the car a month ago i couldn't really notice many chips.. there were a few that had been filled in with the touch up paint but nothing else really worrying me. yesterday i gave the car it's first big bath and found about 40 tiny white chips all over the bonnet.....AND one chip in the glass roof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i fussed about it for a while but remembered that the bonnet on my old mini had just the same issue with chips. i will try to not let it bother me so much even though it is frustrating!!
Unfortunately, "modern" (i.e. crap) water-based paints just don't perform like traditional solvent-based versions do ...
At least you can't blame the paint for the chip in the glass ! ...
I've got one chip at the top of the windscreen and one on a fog lamp - both are almost unnoticeable - all cars run the same risk ...
I also had one large chip \ dent on the leading edge of the bonnet (caused by a large stone), as well as a number of tiny 'pin-pricks' on the remainder, plus a scattering on the front bumper, all after some 2 years from new ...
I just "bit the bullet" and had a bonnet \ bumper respray done, by a refinisher who used 'proper' paint (the smelly toxic stuff) - which I'm hoping \ assuming will have a decent lifespan ....
that's what i told my GF esterday that i will not bother with the hassle of trying to get the paint rectified by honda just leave it till it get's so bad that the best thing is to get it re-sprayed PROPERLY by someone else.. .the chips as you mentioned are tiny pin pricks... it's like looking at the stars at night all over my NHB paint

That's the drawback of a black colour-coat over a pale primer ... on my Galaxy Grey model, it was extremely difficult to spot them ... but I knew they were there ...
Well my 4 month old 09 civic is flaking. Three noticable flakes off the bonnet and two on drivers door. They appeared while I was washing the bonnet and I made them bigger with the power hose. (only a cheap B&Q one)
The paint is so thin I cant believe its that thin. No car I've owned has had paint wash off during cleaning.
Now I got to try and persuade my dealer they are not stonechips.
So with the paint warranty I should have no problem right?
I'm guessing by the size of this thread Honda are not rectifying the problem.
I went to dealer and he referred me to an independant paint shop who are registered Honda, Porsche, Mercedes, Landrover and Jaguar.
He tells me he is fed up with Hondas coming in from the dealer. The dealer wont comment to customers (obviously) because they are stonechips due to the steep angle of the bonnet. He said the paints used these days are harder to be more scratch resistant but are more brittle as a result. He also said that Mercedes were worse for the chipping. Nothing to do with water based paint in his opinion. The paint was 110-120 microns thick on my bonnet and that is a good enough thickness also. (80-120 is acceptable)
He said he would happily paint it if Honda would pay but he knows they wont.
FYI look at a windscreen of a 2-3 yr old (or more) car. It will be covered in small stonechips/pitted. I saw some today when talking to the paint assessor.
Shame Honda dont make clear in the brochure that the civic is prone to stonechipping. Otherwise I would of considered my purchase more wisely.
So I bought a touch up stick for £4.65 cleaned and did best I could. Looks like I've just got to accept that it's going to happen. I can though, drive in a defensive manner to help prevent it. i.e. stay back from lorries, buses etc at motorway speeds. Maybe that will help.
Not news anyone wants to hear but I suppose its a truth we dont want to accept.
So who wants a carbon bonnet?
To Admin,
I understand this thread is being used to try to edge Honda into accepting some responsibility for the chipping. So I understand if you want to edit/delete my post.
Not very happy, had my new Met Silver Type S GT since Wednesday evening & already have a nasty stone chip on the bonnet, I have only driven about 150 miles.[smilie=sadlook.gif]
after my visit to the service manager at drake & fletcher honda in maidstone regarding faulty brakes i decide to question him about the paint issues. He looked a little uncomfortable when i said the paint was soft and then said that he didn't believe that to be the case. He was more inclined to agree when i suggested that it was more to do with the angle of the bonnet!!! I.ll be getting a touch up pot when i get a chance!
well Hubby volunteered his valeting services today on my 2 week (1500 miles) old black civic only to come in half way through and tell me it had 3 dents and probably around 10 noticable stone chips most of which were on the bonnet. I will get him to take photo's tomorrow if the snow has disappeared by then, as no sooner had he parked it up on the drive it was covered in snow lol..
I can't imagine the company buying civics again which is nice as it's a lovely car
That is one of the unfortunate things about black.
Knowing that a lot of manufacturers suffer from water based paint at the moment I opted again for a colour that closely resembles the undercoat = grey or red.
Doesn't solve the problem but it doesn't show up as much between touchups.
The only way I can see of easing the problem long term is to find someone who still has access to the old solvent based paint and give the bonnet a respray.
Brand new civic and it has different shades of colour on the door, I can see circles of lighter blue about 3 inches in diameter. Will get some pictures up later, on my way to the dealers to see what they say about it
Sorry no photos. I've just ordered my 1.4 Si in Milano Red. Would it be worth having some some paint protection film fitted on the bonnet and wings? Has anyone done this?
This is such long thread, both in posts and time, you would think Honda would have sat up and take notice, and not "stick em up" and take yer money.
Here's one for you......de badged my car(civic logo), used hair dryer & it came off just fine.....last bit of sticky crap & I used my thumb nail.... Which went through the paint like a knife through butter! Says it all about the quality of the paint ya ask me
A new car less than three years old should not have the type of stone chips displayed here. My 12 year old rover doesnt have a single chip but a shed load of other scratches and stuff. Ive just sold my BMW which picked up a few chips going up and down one of those roads with 'loose chippings', but on that road you could really hear the stones smacking into the car.
When you guys drive your cars can you hear stones hitting the body because if you cant then really this is some terrible paint quality. At the moment im in the market for an approved used CTR FN2 in NHB and i did notice the paint quality being pretty sketchy on alot of the cars at Honda.
I went to a dealer to look at a CTR in Deep Bronze Pearl. That paint had an egg shell effect which looked like it had been sprayed by cowboys. Seriously my rover banger had better paintwork than this car (excluding scrapes on my old car). I even saw the brand new models they had in. Again the paint quality really was poor, like the type of stuff you would see in a back street bodyshop. In fact i probably think that one of my mates who owns one of those back street places could do a better job than Honda.
Maybe, but mine in nearly 3 years has been a shining example of trouble free motoring.Interior's keeping well,a couple of tiny chips on the bonnet;still usable tread on all tyres at 21k miles.I only hope my next car is as good as this one's been so far.
I started a thread called 'Excessive Stone Chips'; I then say this thread.
I bought a new Honda Civic at the end of 2009. Almost straight away I noticed I was getting a greater number of stone chips & in odd locations compared to other cars I had owned; bonnet, offside wing, both offside doors & the roof. I know that grit & broken road surfaces add to the chip hazard in winter but I think it may be that the paint is weak & also susceptible to chipping when cold. I have picked up less chips during the warmer spring & summer months.
Honda advised me to have a paint density check done as stone chips are not covered by the normal warranty. I plan to do this when it gets cold again. However, I think that it is not the density but how the paint reacts to temperature that could be the problem. More pliable when warm & brittle when cold.
From memory respraying the bonnet or individual panels can cost from 2-400 depending on where you are and who you go to... I dread to think of the cost of a complete respray!
I'm sure temperature is an issue here. I pick up a lot more chips when it was cold i.e. < 5 deg C. When warm the paint has greater flexibility & absorbs impacts better; when it is cold it is brittle.
I've never had this issue on any other cars so there is an issue with Honda paint. Could this be raise to BBC Watchdog, Which? or Trading Standards? The UK Sales of Goods Act 1979 states:
'fit for purpose' – this means both their everyday purpose, and also any specific purpose that you agreed with the seller.
be of satisfactory quality – Goods must be of a standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory (having regard to any description applied to them, the price and all other relevant circumstances). Quality is a general term which covers a number of matters including:
* appearance and finish;
* freedom from minor defects;
* safety;
* durability.
If your claim is about a problem that arises within six months of buying the product, it's up to the retailer to prove that the goods were fit for purpose – or 'as described' – when it sold them. It is also responsible for proving that the problem was caused by you (for example, because you had an accident with the item that damaged it). Beyond six months, it's up to you to prove that the problem was the retailer's. So you may need to prove that the fault was not down to wear and tear or damage you caused, and that the product (or a component) should have lasted longer than it did. To do this you may need an expert's report, for example from an engineer or mechanic.
Guys just to give you an update on this:
I know its been sometime since I posted, but it had to take a back seat with a few personal issues, job relocation, and career moves.
Anyway here are the facts:
1 - Paint test done by Dealership
2 - Paint found to be in "tollerant levels"
3 - Dealership unwilling to assist anyfurther.
4 - Honda UK advised try another dealer or pay for an independent paint test
5 - Independent means "only use RTL paint repairs" therefore not independent.
Now after speaking to trading standards they advise for me to take the matter further I will need to carry out an independent paint inspection, with a written report.
Theya dvise it does not have to be RTL, as a Judge would rule if Honda stipulate only using RTL, then it is not Independent.
I am now awaiting Honda UK's final reply, before I contact the media.
I am also persuing a horrid customer service saga about my dealership, which has led me to be banned, for no apparent reason.
Honda Uk have advised they can not help on this matter but will carry out and internal investiagtion.
A very good local body shop who has actually resprayed the bumper on my mothers civic, and done a fab job, has quoted £300 for respraying the Bonnet, bumper and wings. Which I think is a very good price.
I have come to the point where I may just pay to have the work done and persue the claim at a later date, as currently the mass of stonechips is ruining my enjoyment of the car.
Hpe to see you on the TV soon.
