P1236 boost pressure above excepted

Just on the way back from work and got the engine managment light on

Called the AA anyway and it came back with "P1236 boost pressure above excepted." AA guy cleared it and said i would take it in anyway as he couldnt do much else.

Has anyone come across this or know what the fix will be? I am taking the car to Honda first thing in the morning regardless as its still covered.

Ps soon as the light came on i felt a slight judder but i didn't really push it after that. Once the fault was cleared i gave it some revs to listen out for anything but couldn't hear anything different.

Think thats definitely something you should let the dealer worry about

You have a variable blade turbo that can change the pressure...theres also a bypass to relieve excess pressure. There is also sensors for the boost pressure. There might be a fault in one of these or the ECU map.

Its way beyond most peoples skills/equipment to do anything about.

Usually ends up being the turbo,variable veins usuall stick due to excessive carbon build up causing overboost, very rare turbo pressure sensors are wrong. Get the airmass meter checked as this can cause excessive carbon problems,and clean egr valve.

Well the car is with the dealer now , even though the AA cleared the fault it has not returned when i was driving or loss of power but i want to be safe.

They can check the knock i get when the car is turning on full lock also.

In the mean time i have a 260bhp VW eos to drive, feels like i have to make it work as its petrol but still very nice.

Honda say they have found no faults at all with the car

So not too sure whats going on really, you don't just get engine management lights on for no reason do you.

Said the was no trace of the error at all, surely would have been where the AA cleared the error.

Saying that they said my car was ready for collection and when i asked about the knocking from turning when on full lock the guys said never knew you had that issue

Considering taking it to another dealer as my car is out of cover soon.

This fault can be caused by a number of things. The turbo is controlled by vacuum from the vacuum pump, and an electric solenoid valve. So it could be an electrical connection, the vacuum, a vacuum hose, the solenoid or the turbo itself.

So it is quite possible that it's a leaky hose, a poor electrical connection, or just a random spurious thing.

Also (not sure if it's applicable here), remapped cars can do this when driven really harshly (or on a rolling road). A quick reset is all that's needed.

If the fault doesn't come back, I wouldn't worry about it.

just had my 2nd engine light come on with the same message.

Didnt let them know i had it a while back and they AA cleared it.

Starting to annoy me now

Get it in the dealers matey....dont reset it this time.
Take it to a decent listed honda dealer if you have one local.
Overboost ...if it is occurring is potentially very bad for the engine.

Have you had it remapped at all ?

sorry just seen you sig about celtic. what was the issue ?

Honda Derby got me in straight away today cleared and showed me the so called tests they run, revs the engine at 2000 rpm in neutral then again at 3000rpm and some turbo checks.

I didn't mention I had already had this a few months back and the AA guy cleared it just in case I had damage and they tried to say the AA guy had made my warranty invalid or something.

Mine has been remapped yeah and now back to default as the car felt like an automatic and the lag of the turbo was really bad.

But then again i was using a Celtic 197bhp remp and i was told it was the 194bhp version - not to happy to say the least when i found out!

I'm doing 140 miles a day and don't have the time to keep dropping it into Honda for these sort of issues.

Brings me back to the days of my pug 206 and coil pack problems.

If it is down to the remap i wish i had never of put it on the car, not worth the hassle.

Did you contact celtic about the lag issue ?
Did they install the map or was it DIY ?

Am a 7th Gen Accord owner that has the same engine and I think I and others have experienced the same problem. Happened to me under full throttle. The engine will bog down, then the coil light starts flashing saying its an emissions fault. Then the car goes into limp home mode. Cant go above 2k rpm.

Can clear the fault using the proceedure in the Accord manual not sure if works for the civic.

Turn engine off
wait 30 seconds
Turn engine on
Turn engine off
wait 30 seconds
Turn engine on
Turn engine off
wait 30 seconds
Turn engine on

Not sure what causes this and like you I cant leave the car faulty and take it to a dealer. Suggestions are the engine is tempremental over the make of fuel filter used. I've just had my car serviced, switched from Castrol Magnatec (car has load of stickers in it for this oil 0w30) to Fuchs Titan Sypersyn. Also made sure it had a Honda dealer sourced bosch fuel filter. Will give the car some beans tonight and see if it is still doing it. I've also run a fair few tanks of V-Power Diesel through and running on Diesel Extra from shell. Keeping away from Supermarket diesel as it just doesn't seem to run as well.

Be interesting to see if the actual issue is found, but at the time, its like a big bit of soot (or something) gets drawn in and the engine bogs down. Then the engine management takes over.

Someone might have been screwing around with that map.
See how the honda diagnostic goes.
If they dont find anything.....

If it was me...I'd get a new 194bhp map direct from celtic.
Just in case theres a scrambled map area or something that your original map has not overwritten.
There might have been a fault in some of the code uploaded by the galetto or something.
There might have been a fault in the galetto itself.

The turbo boost is adjusted by these maps...it would explain a lot and make sense if the turbo/hardware is not faulty.

I know the one i was sold was the 197bhp map as Celtic confirmed and were not too happy!

Also said its probably prematurely worn my components as I donít have an uprated clutch etc.

I know the code is boost over pressure and they didnt seem to think it was anything else, its cleared now and car seems back to normal.

Would be interesting to see how my car is with the 194 map on, if the turbo lag is as bad or clutch struggling as much.

To be honest ...I'd rather have the 194 map.
The max bhp and max torque is almost perfectly matched to the gearing.
I was quite amazed at how perfect....discussing it with lee the other day.
This is the lower window where your dropping onto lower gears.
It will be quicker to stay in higher gears but gearchange becomes torque curve dependant.

So whats the optimum map for the gearing ?
Well we want to be in 3rd gear right upto 60...then we can change.
We also need to drop down onto Max torque in 4th gear @ 60+.
60 / 17.215 = 3485 rpm
60 / 23.201 = 2586 rpm
Our max torque figure must occur at 2586+ rpm.
Now we also want to be at max power in 2nd before dropping onto 3rd gear.
2586 / 1000 * 17.215 = 44.418 mph
44.418 / 11.105 = 4000 rpm
or
6.691545 / 4.31649 * 2586 = 4008 rpm
Max BHP = 4000 rpm....as much as you can get
Max Torque = 2586 rpm...as much as you can get
Celtic 1 = 4086 and 2657.... (Max power at wheels 3326 rpm - 4th gear change)
Celtic 2 = 3731 and 2635....(Max power at wheels 3360 rpm - 4th gear change)

Theres nothing to stop you changing 3rd to 4th above 60..
..but the Max BHP must be 1.55x Max Torque for optimum 2nd gear change to 3rd...
2550 and 3953
2600 and 4031
2650 and 4108
2700 and 4185.....

Speed per 1000rpm per gear.

Interesting read mate, thank you.

The guy i had the 197bhp map off said it would make a difference if i still had the 194bhp version, still see the lag and clutch slip.

But then again he told me the 197 map was the 194 so

You might have another probem with a MAF going out of spec or something. Perhaps even the DBW position sensor.
With a custom remap the MAP is tuned to your sensors as they currently work and not how they should work...if you follow that.
Yours may give differnet readings at the same rpm and thottle than the original and wont work the same.
Like you, If I hammer the throttle I'll go nowhere.
I find its far quicker to go straight to half thottle (with the OEM map) then press slowly.
I havent had the celtic fitted so I cant comment if it suffers/alleviates the same problem.

The main issue with the lag is the exhaust IMO.
Its way too small and not very aerodyamic.
Instead of the exhaust escaping out the pipe like it should...
...it ends up being sucked back in the engine at low rpm.
The turbo cant spin up as easily as it should as the flows not there.

Funny you should mention the exhaust mate, guy from powerflow looked at it when i was at an audio place near me and said the is potential for allot better one to be developed.

Anyone have a different exhaust for the 2.2 would be interesting to know.
