Broken Wing Mirror

Just got back from a jaunt around the country - unfortunately cut short because a large German coach decided to make me the filling in a sandwich.

Fortunately the only casualty was the passenger wing-mirror. But that's now hanging off ... the round metal housing snapped. Everything else seems ok - the wiring is intact, as is the mirror. It just needs welding back on I guess.

So my question is how much is it likely to cost?

It won't be welding - the heat transfer would damage everything - replacement part needed, if not the entire mirror unit ...

Scrapyard for the metal housing ? ...

Is it 'bondable' (epoxy glue or 'plastic metal' ?) ...

Just to advise others (in-case they have this issue):

£126 new mirror unit (without light)
£26 new body-coloured housing (comes already painted)

Advised as taking up to an hours labour.

Quoted £232 (inclusive of VAT) from a local garage - but will be less if they can do the job quicker.

Considering that I'm due for a monster service from Honda ... couldn't come at a worse time.

Perhaps.

But there was ambiguity straightaway - they claimed that it was me moving off that caused the impact; I maintain it was them moving off from the junction. They then replied that I shouldn't have come alongside such a large vehicle as theirs anyway. Perhaps they're right. But there was room before they started to move off.

Ambiguous regardless.

Anyway ... it's more hassle than I want on my insurance and I don't have protected NCB so ...

Just one to chalk up to experience I think.

This appears correct as Honda quoted me closer to £300 when i had to replace mine.

I looked at your post Willrob. It was the first one I looked at even before I posted this thread. And before I phoned around garages. But I came to the conclusion it was beyond my abilities / toolbox.

The £232 is the 'worst-case price' ... the guy I spoke to expected it to be a bit less based on the labour being less than 1 hour. £200 might be closer to the mark ... I will know when I pick it up on Wednesday

is your indicator damaged? is the painted cover damaged or livable with? have you got auto fold or manual mirrors? i couldn't give you a definitive answer until we saw what was actually required. and reg. number or chassis number. all i know is that because the civic mirrors stick out somewhat, we are replacing them all the time. the only bit we don't stock is the colour coded cover, for obvious reasons. i have certain narrow lanes to negotiate that i wind the buggers in with a touch of a button.

LOL! I'm gonna' remember that the next time I pull up next to a bosch bus.

The indicator is fine - hence I'm not shelling out for that part. The body-coloured cover was scratched but I was happy for them to take that off the old one ... until I saw it was only £26 for a new one. May as well get it for so little extra.

The mirrors are the auto-fold, touch-the-button on-the-door type. What was unnerving was, driving up to the garage, I could hear the wing-mirror motor continuously whirring away, trying to move the mirror into position - which of-course was never going to happen.

the labour f.r.t is 0.6 (just over half an hour) so the job could be done at any honda dealer for less than 200 quid all day long.

The wife clipped the wing mirror of my ES this morning Apparently the whole thing is now hanging off by wires and it looks like it will have to be replaced completely ( the glass is intact though).

Apart from the Crown dealership in Honda who is going to charge a lot, do you know of any reputatable garage in North London (Finchley/ barnet area)?

thanks!
