When the sun hits my windscreen at a certain angle (usually when its setting), the thing looks a complete mess.

Hundreds of very fine scratches and marks all over the place, is there any way to remove these?

At any other time of the day the screen looks crystal clear.

It's annoying as I always take care when cleaning it, it is probally from all the salt and grit over the winter

Eco display
Same here.

At least it matches my paintwork.

I did read somewhere that the windscreen glass is 'very thin and very soft'.

My last one had as many tiny chips on the windscreen as the front bumper.

Must be an 'accountants' specified windscreen.
