Engine Recent faults? - Civinfo

Recent faults?

I have had my 1.8 Civic SE for about 2 months, and after lending it to my dad for the day...I do not think he has done anything in terms of damage but...

It seemed to suffer from both engine jerks and loss of traction, I started this thread tonight as from driving back from the Trafford Centre last night I jumped on the motorway and booted it in 5th doing about 86 and was changing lanes & a little further on cornering and it was as if there was minimal traction and as if the handling was terrible.

I checked my tyres to check the tread just to be sure and it isn't that...I dunno if the engine jerks are to do with the traction but when driving hard and fast the revs dont seem to be constant as if they are intermittent?

The car is due its service, and has been fully serviced since new in 2006.

I just wondered if anyone else had this fault/ knew what it was and how to repair it? It hasn't always done this and the drive difference is noticeable.

If your revs are up and down like a yoyo...your clutch is slipping.
Find a country lane....
Slow to 30 in 4th...
Put your foot on the floor and keep it there...
Your revs should climb steady to redline.
If they suddenly shoot up and then drop and then carry on...
Thats your clutch slipping at max torque until it has gone past this rpm.

128 lb ft at 4300 rpm. Max Torque 1.8
Your RPM will go erratic at/ just before 4300rpm
If the clutch is slipping.
The worse it gets the earlier it slips.

Oh.... keep you foot off the clutch pedal

Cheers for that relic, I shall try that today...I should pick my spot carefully...got a bl**dy speeding fine through today..40 in a 30. Running around for my dad and trying to dash back in time to get sufficient revision for my exam...never mind...father was full of sympathy as can be expected..

I did this today, and the revs were nice and steady and didn't bounce around. It almost feels as if the traction is lost, and when going over small potholes, if there are 2 simultaneously it feels as if there is no grip?

When I turn my VSA off it leaves and exclamation mark on the dash, is this right also?

Check your tyre pressures....34-36 psi.
Check your wheel nuts.

Jack the car up and make sure all the wheels spin freely.
Look at the front of the wheels to see if they are noticably buckled.
While the rear is up check the handbrake locks and releases the rear wheels.

The car can feel un nerved cornering over bumpy surfaces.
Thats the wheels/tyres not following the bumps.
The wheels are heavy/big and shocks not very good on bumpy surfaces.

Is the car slowing rapidly like braking when the grip goes ?
Do you feel any judder through the steering wheel when braking or driving or cornering ?

Hi Relic,

Checked all the items on your checklist, many thanks for compiling that..but everything is as it should and none of the latter 2 problems occur, perhaps I am just over estimating the Civic with the rubbish roads near me.

Could also be tyres as well.
The harder the rubber the longer they last but the less grip you'll get.
The civic does not like bumpy corners one bit im afraid.

Was gonna say, no wonder pal! but then read the rest and see the bit about your studying...dad sympathetic enough to help pay for the fine...I would hope so!! Time to poke...

yeah he paid the fine...got it through today...a speed awareness course in late July...so not too bad!!!

and the car seems to be back to its cracking self...no problems...

I fill the car up with Total Excellium every time...but my dad filled it up when he had it and said he put 40 premium in...could this affect performance with the engine, as I filled it up with excellium and it is almost empty and running brilliant again!??!

Yes fuels can make a massive differnce especialyl with judder
