Rattle... gear box, clutch or else?

Hello All, first post.

I bought a 2006 Civic (1.8 petrol) last week, 100k on the clock. It's had full Honda service history and overall it's in great nick. I'm not a petrol head but it's a great car to drive and I'm enjoying it immensely. Steering is great and so is everything else.

But there is one thing I've noticed that I'm not sure is right. There is a rattle coming from the front. I don't think I have noticed it when buying a car. It was a private sale and the person that sold the car to me was really attentive and really maintained the car so I don't think I was sold a lemon. It could be that I really pushed it the first night (took her out for a drive at midnight as soon as insurance and tax started). Rattle is mostly noticeable in the first 3 gears when starting. It rattles along with the engine (faster at higher revs) and is mostly noticeable under 2,500 rpm. However I do believe it's still there at higher revs and gears, but blends in with the engine noise.

At first I thought it was the exhaust, but not so sure anymore. Car needs to be in gear for the rattle to appear. In neutral when parked it doesn't rattle, but engaging clutch makes the engine sound cleaner, so there is a difference how it sounds (just not huge).

Most (if not all) fluids were replaced recently. It passed MOT a month ago and had Honda inspection in May (2000 mile back). Clutch isn't slipping and all gears go in well. Apart from that rattle she's a dream to drive. Just in case I've got her booked in tomorrow so mechanic can listen to this.

Am I being over-sensitive or is there an actual issue? Does anyone have any idea? I've looked under bonnet and nothing seems loose that could do this.

Thanks in advance!
Luke

Maybe a loose undertray or heatshield maybe, have you checked underneath ?

Thank you for the welcome.

Good point. I did have a look underneath. There is a piece of plastic (is that undertray) on passenger side that looks like it's a bit loose and it has slight damage. Well I say damage it's not as tight as everything else. Would it not rattle when rolling in idle? I can roll it down the hill in neutral with no rattle. It's only when the car is in gear.

As to heatshield it feels well in place so don't think it's that. I could always try to tighten it.

i have a 1.8 which developed a rattle very recently and it had to have the gear box refurbished and a new clutch, mines done about 95000
the rattle was only noticeable at low revs to start with then all of a sudden it got stuck in gear and started making a rattle on tick over which it hadn't done before, but it is very nice to drive now its all been done

Thanks Grossey. That doesn't sound too promising. Did it cost a lot to fix?

I've contacted the previous owner just to put my mind at ease. The car has had a health check twice this year done by Honda. Once in May when service and in early August when MOT was due. Both time road tested by Honda (among other checks). Passed MOT with no advisories as well.

I hope I'm just being oversensitive.

Found a video on YouTube which shows off the issue quite well. Can't link yet as I've got to get my post number up.

If anyone fancies having a look the title is

2008 Honda Civic manual transmission noise

It's got around 8,800 views.

Thanks for that. Good mates to have. Sadly, I have no such mates, so that puts it above 1k. Ouch!

Hmmm... yes, I agree 750 is still a lot of money. I bought Civic as they have great reliability record. It replaced my Mondeo which went to scrap. Ironically, clutch was slipping. However it was happening since late last year and at 120k miles I decided it's not worth doing. It was still ok-ish on the road, not had other issues in 6 years ownership. Decided it won't be viable to get it sorted. Now it looks like it may worse on a "new" Honda.

Could anyone recommend a decent garage Sheffield or nearby to get this done? Someone who specialised in Honda but isn't as expensive as Honda dealer.

it might be worth taking it back to Honda if it has full service history with them and they also checked it last month and said is was all fine, my gear box was making plenty of noise before it gave in for about three weeks which is roughly how long it was since yours was checked over, try them saying they only checked it over three weeks ago and now its making all this noise

Good point, thanks. Seeing local car mechanic tomorrow morning, if he mentions something serious I'll be going to Honda asking for an explanation.

I had a rattle in gear, thought it was a heatshield but it turned out to be the springs on the clutch plate.

Went to my local car mechanic yesterday. Had one of them as a passenger the first time out and then another (the boss) driving to get a second opinion.

The bad news it is the gearbox, however the good news is... he told me not to worry for now. According to him it could go on like this for years. Was I to repair it now it would be around 800. All he suggested for now was gearbox fluid change.

I've no idea if I have a leg to stand on if I was to contact Honda. After all it's a 12 year old car that's done 100,000 miles. And I've no issues with former owner, they have taken care of the care really well.
