Air conditioning not working - Compressor running

Hi, i've seen lot of questions regarding a c not working on the Civic but can't find an answer to my problem

A/C not gettng cold
The compressor is engaging and spinning when switching the a/c on
The relay rattles but works (tested)
It's got plenty of gas (I checked and actually overfilled so had to let some out).

I suspect it may be the expansion valve which is a nightmare to replace and means taking out half the interior then having the whole system re gassed - load of money so probably won't bother

Anyone else had something similar?

59 reg Civic Type S (gutless) 68K miles

Many thanks in anticipation.

i also have AC that isn't getting cold....

is there an easy way to check whether it's in need of a re-gas or it's the known relay issue causing it to not get cold?

Its possible for it still to run but be less effective if its lost some refrigerant. Eventually if it keeps losing, the pressure switch will cut the compressor off.
