Just bought a 2007 2.2 civic. Was perfect and dry when I took it for a spin and decided to buy it, 4 days later and the passenger footwell carpet is totally soaked on the very far left by the door.
I have driven a couple of short journeys and had the blower on full in a couple of short blasts to clear the windows and I also filled the wiper washer bottle as that appeared to be empty (where the heck is the actual bottle btw) but apart from that its just been parked up in the rain. The water doesnt smell of anything so dont think its from the window washer
I had a look at the pollen filter and it was dirty but dry - it just took 2 big towels and a lot of stomping to even get rid of the worst of it from the top so it seems a lot of water. My idea is to see what happens when it rains next and if no water try putting the blower on and see if there is any then
Washer bottle is buried in the drivers wing behind the headlamps.
Take a look in the space under the bonnet where the hinges are.
the water running off the screen will go down that gulley and should fall out through the wing, it may be blocked with leaves and other crud which backs the water up and it will find a way in.
might have to remove the trim round the wiper arm, arm off first, to chase down any leaks.
check the door card on the passenger door. if that is wet at the bottom then it could be that the drains in the door are blocked or the membrane is shot and it is filling with water which will eventually spill over into the footwell.
this is probably the easiest one to check first

Cheers Wilmo, did as you said and took the trim off under the windscreen and lo and behold a ton of crap. Cleared it all out - heavy showers today and carpet is bone dry!
Keep your fingers crossed for me everyone
Only issue I'm having is getting the passenger side scuttle trim to stay locked in place - I push it in and hear/feel a click and then it just pops straight out again?
could be a few things ,1st check if the little grommets at the bottom of the doors have been removed it used to be a problem when they got gunked up filling up the doors with rain water, Honda had a service bulletin to have these removed , 2nd as it had a new windscreen do you know known a few leak when badly fitted, 3rd also check there is a little hose under the car located middle of the engine this gets blocked it will cause a leak inside the car, if non of the above then haven't a clue ...
With the scuttle just take it all off and make sure that the foam strip is not in the way plus any pipes for the washers etc. etc.
check any clips and tangs just to make sure they haven't been bent out of shape, it's all soft plastic and not really designed to come off once the car is built
Well, seems I spoke too soon - came back tonight after more rain and soaking again!!
Just dont get it as fine for 2 days of heavy rain and now back to this again - only difference was today was rain and strong winds so must be the direction
Don't know if they can be actually hired, namely a smoke generator placed inside the car, the idea being any egress of smoke seen from the car would then logically be seen to be the source of the water entry into the car. ( Wheeler Dealer Ed did it on an Aston I think !)
I havent moved it the past 3 days so its been sat in the exact same position that it was when I thought I'd fixed it. Last night I moped it all up AGAIN and I parked it the other way round to test so will go and have a look in a bit. My biggest fear is will i now have a wet drivers side to match....
Good idea with the smoke machine, used to be a DJ and had one too, oh well
So no water on the divers side and the passenger carpet was wet again (rained last night) - poured some water over that side of the screen and saw water trickling out the bottom of the car but the carpet was wetter again so it must be still blocked somewhere or something else is going on in that area
Hey Wilmo, I noticed the water coming out in some unusual places when I tested including from one of the nuts holding the wheel arch trim in place, apart from that, it seemed to be pouring out under the car where the wing meets the main body Could it be blocked somewhere in the wing do you think? I've no idea where the water should be going to check
It should be coming out around that area. I would remove the arch lining to check that space. Not a difficult job, just a load of clips and screws, possibly easier with the wheel off. It is possible that crud has built up and the water is not coming out of the correct place but backing up and coming out where it can, including back into the car.
And I think we may have found the problem, took it into my local garage and the seal around the passenger side windscreen where it meets the roof has completely popped up/come away!
Sorry its taken a while to get back but wanted to be sure!
Took it into my local auto glass place and asked them to refit the screen, they said the seal at the top right of the passenger side of the windscreen had completely come away and they could actually lift that corner up.
£70 to reseat it, several days of heavy rain and winds later and no wet carpet - hallelujah!
Hopefully thats it and at least this might help someone else with the same issue...
