Key in the door lock does nothing

I have started getting a problem where the car won't unlock using the key fob. Lasts for a minute or so then is ok for several days. Searching the forum it is possible the fob battery is on its way out.
Reading other posts it seemed that I can unlock the door using the key in the door lock, possibly without setting the alarm off. Reading the manual this seems to depend on whether you have the ultrasonic or not.
Anyway I though I would try it out, and this is where I have found a fault.
Using the key in the door lock does absolutely nothing at all. It won't lock the car if unlocked, and won't unlock it if locked.
The fob locks and unlocks most of the time, the switch inside on the door locks and unlocks ok, and the master switch locks and unlocks ok.
I thought it would be a mechanical operation, but I suspect it may be electronic.

It is just using the key in the lock that does nothing. I have not been able to find any other report of this problem, anyone have any idea of what might be wrong?

it sounds like the mechanical part of the lock has been disconnected in the door panel
the problem being if your car battery goes flat how will you get in the car if you can't mechanically unlock it
i don't think it is standard to only be able to unlock the car by remote only

I have same problem as OP, key in door lock does nothing. I think it's not a fault, but they way the 9g is designed. Can other 9g owners confirm.

My key fob battery has died and I can't lock the car manually

Mine's fine.

Using the key the opening seems a lot quieter than using the remote but it does unlock, and lock.

I tried it a few times and the second attempt fired off the alarm and only the remote would silence it. After that the alarm didn't go off again even after 4 or 5 more goes.

2 years of lithium battery sounds short ? You been playing with the buttons in your pocket

Nope... worse than that! Left the keys in my trousers and they got washed in the washing machine.

Amazingly they still work, but the battery died very quickly after (Within a week).
