New ECU time?

Posting on behalf of my Grandad. He has a 2.2 8th gen diesel, last week the car alarm went off when unlocking the car using the fob. Alarm would stop now and then and come back. Engine wouldn't start and the green key symbol would come up on the dash.

Had an autoelectrician out who thought the keys needed reprogramming. The battery was flat on the car and they put the jump leads on and the engine would tick over but not start. Took it too Honda and they have had difficulty programming the keys and it could be the ECU. They're running some more tests to clarify it.

But if it is the case of needing another ECU, how easy is it to change over myself using a second hand one?

Cheers

Sorry to double post; Had confirmation that it is the Engine ECU. I'm wanting to order a user set and Honda will be fitting it and programming.

Is there a specific kit I need, as both of these I can see have different part numbers.

You're talking serious money. There are now well established specialist companies who will repair them. I'm told the repairers find that a good proportion of ECUs sent to them for repair are OK.

Sounds like the immobiliser is the issue.

just a thought disconnect the battery and leave for 5 min then reconnect lock with the fob then open the car with the key put the key quickly in the ignition even if the alarm sounds and turn on and try to start if it does not and the key indicator flashes it does point to the immobilizer

I would try that but the car is with Honda, they want to charge £250 fr diagnostics on the ECU. My Grandad is reluctant to pay that for the car which isn't worth a great deal. I wonder why Honda haven't suggested immobiliser
